To Answer your Questions

Although I don't intend to turn my blog purely into a Weight loss blog (I have put Wednesdays aside for this subject) its intended to be about me, my life, my thoughts, my likes/dislikes, and anything else I feel like writing, etc. I have decided to answer some of your questions about yesterdays post with a 2nd post about my weight loss.

Let me point out I am totally commited to losing weight, however long it takes. What I am not prepaered to do is take the fun out of my life. I have said before I have always been on the bigger side but my weight balooned over the last few years for two reasons :-
1. Promotions at work mean I spend more time sat on my backside at a desk or in meetings.
2. I like a drink and love food.

Some of you commented on my low calorie days, these are normally my working days (Monday to Friday) I have changed my diet significantly on these days.

Now :-
Breakfast - Bowl of Porridge + 0.5pint Orange
Lunch - 3 pieces of Fruit (usually Apple, Banana & Orange)
Evening Meal - Salad 3 days, Meat & Veg 1 day, Scampi & Oven chips 1 day + Water.
Before Bed - 0.5pint Milk.

Before :-
Breakfast - 4 slices of Toast + 0.5pint Orange
Lunch - Pie & Chips, Fish & Chips, Sandwichs, etc. + can of Coke
Evening Meal - Usually Cooked meal with dessert + Lemonade
Before Bed - Cheese Sandwich + Milk.
Snacks - Crisps or Chocolate.

I will add I would also drink Beer on 4/5 nights per week I now limit that to Mondays and special occasions which I won't remove from my lifestyle. Trouble with Mondays we do drink up to 8 pints thats why Mondays calorie intake was high.

Weekends depend on my sporting commitments but Saturday evening I have my "treat" meal in the evening (Baccon, Sausage, etc). Yes ok I love it.

Sunday I Usually have Spicy Chicken with veg but I did load up the Carbs last Sunday because we had a 6 hour training session with our British League Table Tennis squad. It was tough work but we are training towards our first matches on 9th 10th September.
I also train Wednesdays for 2 hours and find this really hard with the low calorie intake, I am putting a extra session in tonight (when this post is finished).

For my size I am reasonably fit, eg my pulse rate is around 65 where most people my size are much higher.

At the start of this year my weight was 249lbs and now 221.5lbs. It would be lower but my Vacations don't help. I've been away twice so far with another coming up at the end of September. I don't watch my weight on Holiday, I drink and I eat well although I try to exercise.
Normally I put on between 6 and 10lbs on vacation.

I have developed a spreadsheet to calculate my calories and if anyone would like a master copy to use themselves (you can adapt it for your own foods), or my last weeks to see exactly what I had, I will be happy to send them a copy. Just e'mail me and I will return you a copy.

Finally I would like to Thank all of you for the great Support you are giving me.

August Bank Holiday

Today is August Bank Holiday which means a big market is held in my town. This will pull in many people from all over who have nothing better to do. The Pubs will do good business throughout the day.

This Morning rather than push my way through the crowds I went to work for 4 hours, I don't get paid but can have the time off at a later date (helps towards holidays).

Tonight I'm off out for a few beers with a friend, the Pubs will still have a few drunks left over but they are usually all gone by about 9pm. We usually get a laugh at some of them anyway. I'm actually quite knackered after doing a 6 hour training session yesterday so the beers could go down well.

Who said scousers can't come up with good ideas

NASA

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in 0 gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C.

Driving Rules

Driving Rules

1. A right-lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same drivers to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barrels.

2. Turn signals will give away your next move. A real driver never uses them.

3. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

4. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered 'going with the flow.'

5. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit.

6. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork.

7. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to stretch your legs.

8. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right.

9. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions, and are apparently not enforceable during rush hour.

10. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move over doesn't mean that a driver flashing his high beams behind you doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

11. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an accident, or even if someone is just changing a tire.

12. Throwing litter on the roads adds color to the landscape and gives Adopt-a-Highway crews something to clean up.

13. It is assumed that state police cars passing at high speed may be followed in the event you need to make up a few minutes on your way to work, or the beach.

14. Remember that the goal of every good driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

15. Real female drivers can put on pantyhose, apply eye makeup, and balance the checkbook at seventy-five miles per hour during a snowstorm in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

3 Points in the Bag

Sheffield Wednesday 0 - 1 Leeds United

A David Healy penalty gave the Mighty Whites (sorry Yellow's today) a hard fought 1-0 away victory in the battle of Yorkshires two biggest Clubs. This was a much needed win, just wait until all our injured players return.

So how do you like to dress ?

Three Posts tonight (well the diets keeping me in)

So how do you like to dress ?

I hate wearing ties about the only time you will catch me in one is either at a Wedding, Funeral, Christening or in Posh Golf Club Bar.

And here is a confession I don't even own a Suit (formal dress is not for me).

Luckily the company I work for like everyone from management to the shop floor workers to dress the same and provide us with Polo shirts (so no tie).

If I'm going out I much prefer the smart casual look, whether the shirt is inside or outside the trousers depends on where I'm going and who with.

In fact for day to day I'm much more comfortable in Jeans, T Shirt & trainers. Around the house I tend to wear shorts most of the time.

As for fashions I think there a waste of money, I'm a great buyer of last years fashions, they are much cheaper and value for money, who notices anyway. Of course the real skill is buying articles of clothing before they become fasionable and the price rockets.

Tell me about what you prefer to wear.

This one is for the film buffs

This is a question that I had a discussion about over a few drinks a couple of weeks ago.

What Film sequels are better than the origional ?

This was quite tough the opinion of most people involved in the discussion believed very rarely that a sequel lives up to the standard of the origional.

I have since come up with the following :-

Godfather "2" is the only sequel to get Oscar for best picture in 1974 but the origional also did two years earlier.

Pyscho "2" was made twenty something years after the origional and Anthony Perkins is awesome in this film, very underrated.

Rocky "2" Well at least Rocky beat Apollo in this one.

Harrison Fords Indiana Jones Triology I prefer "The Last Crusade" the third one over the first "Raiders of the Lost Arc".

The 22 James Bond Films are all good and I don't think "Dr No" the first one (despite Ursula) is the best. I know some of the earlier ones are dated but I preferred Sean Connerys "From Russia with Love". I actually like all of them but must mention Roger Moores "Live and let die", I always had a thing about Jane Seymour.

As for Clint Eastwoods three Spaghetti westerns (although technically not a series) I'd definately go for "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" over the origional "Fistfull of Dollars".

Talking of Clint (love some of his films) I don't believe any of the "Dirty Harry" follow ups are as good as the origional.

So what films can you name that was better than the origional ?

Me and this weekend

Last night I was going through a tough time with my weight loss plans but I managed to win the mental battle (with the exception of 2 biscuits with my evening 0.5pint Milk).

This morning I went through to York just to walk about the city centre and do a bit of shopping although there wasn't anything I really wanted. I looked at a few clothes but decided not to buy, my next new clothes will be when I have to because everthing in my wardrobe will be too big.

I looked around a few shops at CD's but didn't buy any. By lunchtime I was starving and gave in and bought a Pork Pie (not in plan). Following my other planned meals for the day I am still under my 2,000cal target so I just have to stay strong until bedtime.

This afternoon I cut my own hair (low maintenance cut) then watched sport on television (Rugby Final).

I've just realised today is exactly one month away from my next vacation to Toronto, I am really looking forward to it as its a new City for me. A trustworthy source tells me the beer is very good so the diet may suffer in Canada.
I actually leave home after work on 26th Sept and stay overnight at Manchester before flying to Toronto on 27th, anyway more about that trip nearer the time.

Tomorrow I have a 6 hour squad training session with our British League Table Tennis squad, If I get the food balance correct I should sweat out a couple of pounds. The problem is the exercise makes you eat and drink for energy, I need to give this some thought when selecting which foods.

Our first British league matches are in two weeks time when we travel to Grantham for 4 matches, we face Scottish team Murrayfield & Formby (Liverpool) on Saturday followed by Elgre (Nottingham) and St Mary's (Hull) on Sunday.

I live in Megawatt Valley

This coming week thousands of protesters (and police) are making my home town their home.

Apparently I live in Megawatt Valley in the shadow of three massive coal fired power stations. Protesters from all around the country are targeting the biggest of these (Drax) and rumour as it going to try and shut it down.

Check out their website - Climate Camp

I am in favour of our governments doing everthing possible to help improve our emmisions. I also believe we can all make changes in our lifestyles to help I am not in favour of these demonstrations, we need to concentrate all our efforts in finding viable alternative energy sources.

If the protesters got their way none of us would have jobs and we would put ourselves back into the middle ages. Trying to close these places without an alternative is the same as us all packing our jobs in so you don't use your car or any other power source.

Are my standards dated ?

A few months ago I was travelling on a packed train when a lady got on with a young child and was stood up. I got up and offered her my seat which she gratefully accepted.

After the journey one of my friends criticised me saying the world has changed, women want equality, its first come first served with seats.

I did not agree, our journey was only about 20minutes and the lady was struggling with a child (not that these points would have made a difference).

Was I wrong to do what I did ?
I don't think so I was actually quite pleased with my behaviour.

Anyway this argument led to other discussions on been a gentleman, what do you think ?

1. If you are sat waiting for a date in a bar or restaurant should you get up when the lady arrives ?

2. Is it ok to buy a person a drink and not expect one in return ?

3. Is anything wrong with buying a lady a no strings attached meal just because you like the person as a friend ?

4. Should you hold open the car door for a lady to get in ?

I'm sure there was a few more we discussed what do you think ?

2GB to fill

Last weekend I bought myself a 2GB Mp3 player mainly for when walking to work and to help pass the time when flying on my various trips across the atlantic.
I did have a 512mb player but the switch is playing up and the new one was a bargain at £49.

Now this is going to take over 500 songs from my exstensive and varied CD collection. I now have a decision to make with what songs to choose (believe me I have a few to pick from) from my years of been a music fan.

Been one for numbers I have decided to load as follows :-
20 songs from 3 acts (Beatles, Rolling Stones & The Jam)
15 songs from 6 acts (Eric Clapton, The Who, Marcia Ball, Blondie, Paul Weller & Slade)
10 songs from 6 acts (Pretenders, Eddie & the Hot Rods, Kinks, Small Faces, U2 & Stray Cats)

I will be picking 30 acts that I will load 5 songs from and the rest will be made up of 1 or 2 songs from many other acts covering the last 5 decades.

Weigh in Wednesday

Weight Last Week - 226lb

Weight this Week - 221.5lb

Loss - 4.5lb

I have missed my walks to and from work this week due to it raining most days so my exercise level is not as high as plan.
However I did train for Table Tennis Wednesday & Thursday last week. I also played my 2nd round of Golf this year last night (although had two beers afterwards), I actually surprised myself and played quite well.

I have really pushed myself hard (most of the time) with a ridiculous low food intake, here are the facts :-

Wednesday - 925cals - absolutely starving and ran out of energy.
Thursday - 1251cals - still starving
Friday - 1217cals - really tough
Saturday - 1687cals - enjoyed my bacon & sausage evening meal survived until then on 3 slices of toast and a bowl of soup.
Sunday - 2193cals - nobody actually thought I'd not have a reasonable Sunday Lunch.
Monday - 1733cals - No Pool match no beer my body is not used to that on Monday's.
Tuesday - 1844cals - Spoilt it with 2 beers after Golf match.

Total in week - 10850cals
Average per day - 1550cals

Unbelievable even for myself I doubt whether I can keep this up but will keep winning this battle. I have tightened my belt one notch this week.

It was following the advice of one of my blogging friends Regina that convinced me to write down everything I eat/drink so I can monitor my calorie intake. Early indications are this works for me and I would advise any other bloggers trying to lose weight to do the same.

I've actually devised a spreadsheet that works out the figures for me I just mark in how many portions of each food type each day to get my result. If anyone would like a copy to use themselves drop me an e'mail and I will send a copy of the master sheet to you.

Vacation in 5 weeks and my new realistic Target weight for then is 215lbs or less, we'll see.

A Win is a Win

The mighty whites are through to the 2nd round of the Carling Cup with a 1-0 win against 2nd division Chester City.
Ok we may have expected more goals but "a Win is a Win" thanks to a Eirik Bakke goal.

Bring on the big boys in the next round.

Holiday Mood - Where Next

I have a money problem ?

On my last visit to the States I actually returned to England with a few dollars left over. I was reluctant to change them back to English money as you lose too much. SoI thought I would save them and use them on my next trip, no problem.

However some of you will have realised my next trip is to Canada (Toronto) so again this money is no good to me.

I have two options, I could change the American money to Canadian or I could book another holiday. No contest holiday it is.

I have checked my days off entitlement and social calendar and reckon I can do a week or so in either late November or mid December.

I know a couple of weeks ago my blog friends helped me choose a list of good North American cities to visit which I consider each trip (Toronto is from this list).

Now last December I visited Chicago but despite enjoying it is was cold in fact it never got above freezing. As I'm a wimp obviously I would like to go to a slightly warmer place this year so this is where you come in (I reckon a few more southern cities ?).

Please give your opinions on any places you suggest (including your town if you think suitable) :-
Tell me about :-
Live music scene ?
Food & Drink ?
Average Tempreture Nov/Dec ?
Other things to do ?
Why should I choose it ?

Ok flight prices may have a say in my choice but I appreciate all of your opinions, try to convince me of your choice.

Last Weekend and the week ahead

With me giving my weight loss plans a big effort this week my life is quite boring at present. Thursday, Friday and today I had to go to work in the car (instead of walk) due to torrential rain, in fact August as been one long rain shower following July's drought and heatwave.
Despite the lack of exercise I hope to have lost weight on my wednesday check (we'll see) as I have cut down on the food & drink. I am currently starving but will last out until the weigh in.

I bought a new MP3 player (2gb) on Saturday as it was only £48 which I thought was a good deal, I should get over 500 songs on it before my Toronto trip in just over 5 weeks time, I need something for the flight. I actually downloaded quite a few on Sunday, maybe do a few more tonight.

Saturday Leeds managed to lose once again to a late goal against Cardiff City the highlight of the day was the fact Chairman Ken Bates threw "Puplicity" Peter Ridsdale our former Chairman (now on Cardiffs commitee) out of the board room and banned him for life. Ridsdale is the man resposible for getting us in a financial mess.

Tonight we haven't got a Pool match so I am staying in to avoid drinking beer to aid the weight loss, this is getting tougher.

Tomorrow I hope to play a round of Golf after work it will only be my second of the year.

I nearly forgot one of my "spies in the camp" informed me that a few of the single ladies at work were discussing eligible men at work and apparently I was on some of the lists. Now I've just got to find out whose list ?

Thats about it.

So what is important

Following my Friday fun questionaire post looking for an ideal women its led me to think what does make two people attract to each each other or even like each other.
I've just read a comment on Texasgal's blog where she has just been to a Pool party and mentions everyone getting older, fatter and even uglier (it comes to us all). She asks the question "How many would have picked their partner if they knew what they would look like today" ?

My gut feeling to this is most of them or it should be. If you think about this logically you should only ever pick a partner that you love been in the company of. If you pick a partner only because they look good on your arm or any other wrong reason it will almost certainly be a doomed relationship.

Ok we all can walk in a room and spot somebody who looks fantastic but if they are not compatable its a none starter. Personalty is far more important than image, both is just a bonus.

I think we pick our friends the same way, what is the point of hanging around with people we are not keen on, make us bored, when we could with people that we have fun with, you only live once. I think its our sixth sense that helps us choose the people we want to spend time with, I think the real key facts are :-
Fun to be with (makes us laugh)
Trust
Reliability
Supportive
I'm sure there are more.

In some respects I think I (and assume you) have picked my blogging friends the same way. Over the various posts a trust is built up, we offer each other support, we make each other laugh, etc.
Since I've started blogging I've looked at many blogs but only comment on the ones I think I'll like the person. Its strange because a lot don't even publish their photo, a lot of us are overweight, etc. I think this proves my point that looks arn't the most important thing when choosing friends.

Me and a Friend

So my last post hasn't yet come up with my ideal partner yet so I suppose I'll have to live on memories.
A friend and hair at the same time, must have been a long time ago !

It may be your lucky day (or not)

Recently after reading all the blogs I like it as come to my notice how many of you talk about your partner or in some cases your search for a ideal partner.

I have always stated that I am not interested in getting involved with a permanent partner I think it would limit my lifestyle. However reading these blogs as led me to think about what type of person would make my perfect match. So now the hunt is on.
Where can I look ? Sports Clubs maybe, Pubs & Clubs would possibly destroy my weight loss plans, Work I'll have to check out whose still available and finally Bloggers there just maybe the ideal women out there.

Food = Fuel = Energy

Following my calorie counting last week (see previous post) losing 2.5lb looks good in a week. However over the weekend the food I ate while competing in a Table Tennis Tournament was far higher than I burned off. Most of the Sandwichs, Sports Drinks, Chocolate, etc were eaten over the weekend (for energy). Afterwards on both Saturday & Sunday I had fairly unhealthy meals (Bacon & Sausage Saturday, Fish & Chips Sunday). I put on weight between Friday & Monday.

Yesterday I experimented with my food intake (less than 1,000 calories in the day). Ok I was starving but last night I attended my normal TT training session.

Now this session is quite hard all top local players, we practice for the first hour certain movement routines then have a 20 minute break. The next hour we play matches against each other. After about 30 minutes of the match play session my legs just went, I had absolutely no energy left so had to drop out. I was like a car running out of fuel.

So this proved that I require a balance of Food/Fuel intake against what I'm burning, I should not put on weight(should lose it) or run out of energy. When competing in future I will look at what I eat for energy, my ideas - Bananas instead of Chocolate, Pasta or Jacket Potato instead of Bacon, Sausage or Bread, Less Sports drinks and more water, etc.

If anyone else has suggestions I am willing to listen.

1st of three posts - Nice One Ken

Greedy rich London Bastards Chelsea have put an official complaint in to the FA about Leeds Chairman Ken Bates for slagging them off (the bastards have poached a couple of our promising youngsters with money).

Anyway Ken's reaction live on TV "I can't wait to see their report, I haven't laughed so much since Ma caught her tits in the Mangle".

NEWS FLASH - Bomb Kit Found

News Flash - British police investigating the terrorist plot to blow up airplanes travelling between England and the U.S. have just found Bomb making equipment in woods near where some of the suspected bombers lived.

Apparently if our newspaper reports are correct the plan was to blow up the planes over many large U.S. cities killing many in the air and on the ground, these cities it is believed included, New York, Chicago, Denver, Washington, LA, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta & Philadelphia.

Later news reports say a Pakistani women has been arrested at Huntington airport, West Virginia trying to smuggle liquid explosive on a plane travelling to Charlotte, North Carolina. Well done the U.S. I hope thats a State where they still have the death penalty.

Wednesday Weight Update - Thanks for the suggestions ladies

Weight last week - 228.5lb

Weight this week - 226lb

Loss - 2.5lb

On my wednesday weight blog on more than one occasion one of my blog friends Regina as advised me to write down everything I eat or drink. Well I would be stupid not to listen to a person that is in great shape for her age so here its is.

I calculate my weeks calorie intake as 16,294 cals or an average of 2,418 per day.
I aim to cut down to below 2,200 cals per day, which I reckon is ok for somebody my size.
I would appreciate opinions here.

As far as exercise goes I trained for table tennis for 3 hours during the week and walked a total of 20 miles.

I also played a tournament Saturday & Sunday playing 13 Table Tennis matches (approx 20 mins each). This also explains some of the calories most of the sandwiches, pork pies, chocolate bars and sports drinks were pack up. This also explains something to me, I always put on a slight amount of weight when in a tournament when I reckon I should burn weight off. I will look at what I eat in future when competing.

Looking at this made me swap having toast with marg & jam last week to having Porridge in the morning this week.

I also intend to drink more water instead of coffee at work as Rachel suggested.

One Lost Friend

Since I started my blog in February this year I feel that I have made a number of good friends who comment on my blog and I comment on theirs. Ok I've never met most of you (actually as you all probably know only met one) but the reason some of you are on my favorites is the fact I like the person I believe you are.
I know in reality I may not meet a lot of you but that doesn't stop me respecting your comments or enjoyment from reading your opinions. However I do hope in the coming months/years to meet some of you if the opportunity presents itself that would please me.

Anyway on to my real point of this post I feel I have to mention one of my friends "Burning Fingers" has decided to remove her blog. I know a couple of you also read BF's blog and will miss her input as much as me.

I now have no way of getting in touch with BF and that dissapoints me because I liked her a lot, I can only hope she changes her mind or makes contact via e'mail sometime in the future. BF was feeling down about her life and lack of someone close, I think she had lost confidence with men after getting a rough deal from a prat she had met via the internet. If people like this only knew what damage they do.

I am extra dissapointed with the fact BF actually lives close to Toronto and thats where I'm going at the end of September. I would have loved to have met her as a friend and given the chance to see that not all men are prats and some of us know how to treat a lady. It would have given me pleasure to treat her to a good night out (meal, drink, laugh, etc) with no strings attached.

But I'm afraid it looks like it can't happen now unless BF has a change of heart and returns to blogging or even e'mails. Anyway I hope she reads this and gives it all proper consideration and realises you can make good friends on these blogs.

It will be nice when I meet other blog friends its just something I feel I want to do (people and travel are two of my passions), I hope you all feel the same.

Back in Action

My computor is now repaired.

No time to write a long post tonight got a Pool match just catching up with you all.

Update from weekend :-

Leeds lost 1-0 away to Crystal Palace who scored with the last kick of the match. Leeds had to play 75minutes with only 10 men after the stupid referee sent off Geoff Horsfield.

I played a veterans Table Tennis tournament at Halifax at the weekend. The standard was quite tough (players from all around the country) and on saturday I came third in my initial group of 8 putting me in band "B" on Sunday. I managed to reach the final but couldn't manage to win, I was quite pleased to beat two Lancastrians on the way to the final.

My National Ranking in this age group (over 40's) has gone up to 85 from 94 a move in the right direction.

I will do a longer post tomorrow (don't know on what yet).

Out of Action

Sorry blog friends I will not be posting due to the fact my computor has caught a nasty virus despite having protection. It is now going and staying off line.

I have got somebody repairing it soon so I hope to be blogging again once repaired.

I will be reading your blogs during lunch break at work but may not be commenting much.

Should We Hang the Bastards ?

Today we are hit by the news that a terrorist attack as been stopped by a major police operation. British airports are in chaos with massive delays and cancelled flights, many peoples holidays are ruined.

The plot as you will have all heard was to carry liquid explosives in drink containers onto 9 or 10 British/American cross Atlantic flights. So far as I know there have been 21 arrests so far in England and a number of arrests in Karachi (Pakistan).

If this plot had not been stopped by our security services (MI5 & CIA) around 4,000 people would have been murdered. These people are normal people (including law abiding muslims) and don't deserve to die because of someone else's sick beliefs.

The men of violence around the world of all races & religions need stopping, they are sick.

Personally I think hanging is too good for these Bastards.

People that irritate me

These irritate me :-

1. People that ride around in cars with windows down playing Rap music really load.

2. People who don't acknowledge you when you hold a door open for them.

3. People that park in disabled spots (that shouldn't).

4. People that push in out of turn at the bar in the pub.

5. People that wear Manchester Utd shirts and don't even know where Manchester is.

6. People that smoke while I'm eating.

7. People that speak so loud on their mobile phones that everyone within the building can hear.

I'm sure everyone can think of more ?

Photo from Friday night

Bad Result

Queens Park Rangers 2 - 2 Leeds Utd
Despite totally dominating the match and leading twice Leeds only came away with one point from their visit to London. At least we didn't lose.
Leeds Goals were scored by Eddie Lewis and Geoff Horsfield.
Next match back in London on Sunday when Leeds visit Crystal Palace.

Music - Twenty British Classics

This list is songs by British artistsI like to listen to, not in any particular order. I didn't include two from the same group but there are hundreds more I could add.
I like all sorts of different styles of music and I change weekly what I listen to but these songs I will always love.

1. Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) - Eric Clapton at his brilliant best.

2. Behind Blue Eyes (The Who) - Sheryl Crow also does an very good version of this song.

3. Angie ( Rolling Stones) - I had to put a Stones song in and this is my favourite.

4. The House of the Rising Sun (Animals) - First UK group to top the American charts. I think Eric Burdons voice is perfect for this song.

5. Ballad of Mott (Mott the Hoople) - Ian Hunters best song but was a "B" side.

6. Good Year for the Roses (Elvis Costello) - Only if they are white.

7. The Bitterest Pill (The Jam) - Pushed close by "A Town called Malice" but I was always going to have Jam song on this list.

8. The Beginning of the End (Eddie and the Hot Rods) - This was not a single, this group were awesome why did they pack it in before they made it big.

9. Tin Soldier (Small Faces) - I like a lot of Small Faces songs and this is the best in my opinion.

10. Celluloid Heroes (Kinks) - Ray Davis was a great songwriter and this proves that some songs are too good to chart. This was pushed close by "Lola"

11. Wild Wood (Paul Weller) - Winner of the service to music award at the 2005 Brits. Along with Lennon the only people to write two songs on this list (see post dated 23rd May).

12. Nights in White Satin (Moody Blues) - I love this song, its something about the colour white I love.

13. Everyday (Slade) - Had to add one from my Glam Years (see post dated 4th March)

14. Don't Look back in Anger (Oasis) - I suppose their not bad for Lancastrians.

15. Starting Over (John Lennon) - My top solo Beatle.

16. Revolution (Beatles) - Only a "B" side but great song.

17. I only want to be with you (Tourists) - Annie Lennox pre Eurythmics version is better than Dusty Springfield origional.

18. Will You (Havel O'Connor) - Great song brilliant writer.

19. I am the Resurrection (Stone Roses) - S**t two groups from Manchester.

20. Golden Brown (Stranglers) - This song is addictive.

What songs do you never get fed up of (they must be a few years old to pass the test of time) ?

Aches and Pains

Three posts tonight

I have just read a newspaper article that say's the average British person suffers 17,277 minor ailments in their lifetime.

Top of the list was Back Pain averaging 80 bouts per year or 6,240 through their life.

Bumps & Bruises were next with 60 injuries per year (4,680 in lifetime).

Others in the top ten ailments included Headaches which we suffer a total of 1,360 (I'm sure they must be taking into account a lot of women I meet).

Stomach Upsets we suffer 390 while we catch the common cold 234 times.

Then them horible Blisters we sometimes get (apparently 312 times), I reckon I'm a bit higher here.

Obviously Life's a pain at times.

Friday Night Good Fun but the diet may have suffered.

Thirteen of us from work went out for a meal on Friday night in York. The night was organised by my gossip friend Vicky in accounts and we had to meet up in "The Last Drop Inn" at just after 7pm.

Vicky warned everyone not to be late "or else", now no prizes for guessing who was late but Vicky managed to blame her friend Sarah (yeh right).

The restaurant we went to was Cuban called "Bobo Lobo" it was very busy but is a nice place. I actually had Sirloin Steak which was cooked in some sort of spices.

Bobo Lobo

We then visited a few bars including "Bar 38", "The Living Room" & "The Parish" before leaving at about 11.30pm. Some went on to a nightclub but I didn't want to be late because I was driving to Scarborough the following morning.

Bar 38

The Living Room

The Parish

We needed a Taxi for five of us Andrew, Sue, Sinead, Diane and myself so I phoned my usual company for a six seater. After about fifteen minutes a Taxi arrived and we all jumped in and told the driver were we wanted to go.
We set off and we realised it wasn't the Taxi company we had phoned, oh dear they will be pleased, it looks like I will need to change my Taxi company, I will be blacklisted.

I eventually got home just after midnight, oh yes and thanks Vicky for texting me at 2am.

Three points in the bag

Leeds Utd 1 - 0 Norwich City
A David Healy penalty gave the mighty whites the start they wanted against one of the favorites for promotion.
Four players made their debut Warner in goal (he is on loan while Sully is injured). Geoff Horsfield who only signed yesterday, Seb Carole & Ian westlake who both came on as substitutes late on.
All the debutants gave a good account of themselves.
Roll on Tuesday when the team travels to London to take on Queens Park Rangers.

Living the flawed Dream

When David O'leary took over the managers job at Leeds he inherited a great bunch of young players who were destined for stardom. Players like Harry Kewell, Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer, Alan Smith, Paul Robinson, etc.

By the Millenium the mighty whites were once again competing at the top end of the English game, they had qualified for Europe in the Eufa Cup. The fans had hope again as they started winning game after game eventually reaching the semi-final of the Eufa Cup. The draw turned out to be what the authorities didn't want Leeds were paired with Galaterassary with the first leg in Istanbul. The Turks had a growing reputation for violence and Leeds massive travelling army sent the alarm bells ringing. Recent years Leeds had lost their hooligan tag and their fans travelled to the Turkish capitol in numbers but the Al Yemi Stadium has another name "Hell".

The unthinkable happend the night before the match when groups of Yorkshire fans enjoying a night out in Istanbuls main square were attacked by hundreds of Knife weilding Turks. Fighting went on for over 20 minutes before police arrived yet Television Cameras were there to film it all. At the end of it all two Leeds supporters Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus lost their lives (they only went to watch a football match). Many other fans were hospitalised with serious stab wounds.

Leeds asked for the match to be cancelled but the authorities overuled and the Whites lost 2-0 but no one cared Football was no longer important that night. On their return Billy's statue at Elland road became a shrine for the two fans.

The following season O'Learys team qualified for the Champions league and the they were issued a terrible 1st round draw paired in a group with two of the favorites Barcelona & AC Milan with the group made up of a team from the place nobody wanted to go Besiktas (Istanbul). First up was Barcelona away and the spaniards proved much too strong for the Leeds youngsters.

A home win against Besiktas gave us a chance but nobody gave us hope in the next match in Milan who had beaten Barcelona. However that night Leeds proved everyone wrong when a Dominic Matteo header gave the whites a shock 1-0 victory.

This group then produced a string of shock results and by the end it was Leeds & Milan who qualified for the 2nd stage. Leeds were again given a tough draw with Real Madrid, Lazio & Anderlecht.

Leeds were growing in confidence and manager O'Leary was given cash to spend from chairman Peter Ridsdale, Ferdinand had arrived for a record fee, Robbie Keane, Seth Johnson all on big contracts. Leeds were up with the big boys and spending like them.

With the supporters now "living the dream" the club was sent in turmoil once again as they made the front pages of the national papers. Two of our players Jonathan Woodgate & Lee Bowyer were accused of a racial assault on an asian student in a Leeds nightclub. They were later sent to trial that lasted almost two years and the club was slaughtered in the press for months.

However this created a siege metality reminiscent of the Revie days and the team played some awesome football to qualify with Real Madrid for the last 8 the dream was still alive. The 1-0 victory in Rome against Lazio thanks to local hero Alan Smiths fantastic goal proved significant. That night Leeds took their biggest travelling support since Paris with 15,000 making the trip to the Olympic stadium.

It was the knock out stage and Leeds were awesome beating spanish champions Deportivo 4-0 in the first leg at Elland Road, although they lost in the 2nd leg Deportivo couldn't stop the whites going through on aggregate to face Valencia in the semi-final. A 0-0 in the home leg left it all to do in Valencia and despite all our hopes it proved a bridge too far and we didn't reach the final.

The fans were not over dissapointed as we had exceeded all expectations we had a great young team we would get plenty of more cracks at this competition, we were about to rule the world, belief was back.

The following season suddenly we started selling some players Ferdinand went to "you know who" ok for a good profit but the fans couldn't understand why. As the new year arrived we topped the league and went to lower division Cardiff for an FA Cup tie and suffered a shock defeat. This game ended in violence when Cardiffs gang about 1500 strong charged across the pitch to confront the travelling Leeds fans, well the Service Crew were also out in force that day and lets just say the police earned their money.

With the Woodgate/Bowyer trial still getting Leeds slaughtered in the papers the club went on a losing streak that saw them tumble down the table.

Something was wrong and rumours circulated they had overspent the club was in dept, the bankers wanted their money, Players were sold.

Eventually after nearly two years Woodgate & Bowyer got a result "NOT GUILTY" had this been a conspiracy we will never know.

New managers were brought in (Venebles then Read) the ground was sold more players were sold, what is happening, we were in trouble.

Eventually we were relegated in 2004 Kevin Blackwell was brought in for his first managers job the vultures were circling, all our players were been sold. The true extent of our dept was £125,000,000 the club was going under they had virtually no assets left. Blackwell took is first training session pre season and only had two players. To his credit he loaned, borrowed, signed those nobody wanted but the trap door was open would Leeds fall through the lower divisions.

Miracle they managed to stay up somehow but bigger problems were around the corner we were one week from going out of buisness (Ridsdale & O'Leary have a lot to answer for). A unlikely saviour arrived in the shape of former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates who bailed us out and saved our club. Ironically he bought the club with the money Roman Abramovich gave him for his Chelsea shares.

Last season we made the promotion play offs and almost got back to the premiership which was a remarkable achievement, perhaps the yo-yo is on the way up again, we will see.

This brings my story of the history of Leeds Utd that I have told on this blog over the last week or so to an end. I know a lot of my blog friends aren't that interested in football but I ask you wish my team luck when they start a new chapter tomorrow.

They face Norwich City at Elland Road in the first match of the season and knowing Leeds anything could happen and it probably will.

The Wilko era

In the late eighties Sgt Wilko (Howard Wilkinson) was given the task of restoring the club to the top flight of English Soccer.

Wilko made some very shrewd signings such as Vinnie Jones (now more famous as a film star) known as a midfield hard man, Lee Chapman a journey man striker that had been to over ten clubs, Gordon Strachon a Scotsman whoose career had stagnated at them over the hills, plus a few others.

By 1990 Wilko had led Leeds back to the top flight winning the old second division, Jones has a Tatoo on his leg to prove it.

Once again the mighty whites had returned to the big time although once again slagged in the press and starting the next season as relegation favorites Leeds group of unknowns surprised all finishing 4th and qualifying for the Eufa Cup. Chapman the striker nobody wanted was the leagues top scorer.

But it was the following season when Wilkos bunch of misfits shocked everyone by taking the English title. By this time Jones had done his job and was replaced in the side with local hero David Batty a man with white blood flowing through his veins .

This team will never forgotten in Leeds history - Lucic, Sterland, Dorigo, Batty, Fairclough, Whyte, Stachon, Wallace, Chapman, McAllister and Speed. They played inspired football leaving the enemy (you know who) 5 points adrift at the end of the season.

To date Sgt Wilko is the last English man to manage a championship winning side.

The future looked rosy for Leeds in 1992 as the clubs youngsters won the Youth Cup in a two legged final against (you know who) winning both matches home and away. The 1st leg at Old Trafford drew a record crowd for a youth match (34,000) but the record didn't stand long with 36,000 turning up at Leeds. Was this the start of another decade of glory it looked good at the time. Amazingley none of the Leeds youngsters made it to the top of the game most finishing up at lower division clubs when the players from the beaten finalists went on to become slightly well known (Beckham, Scholes, Nevilles, Gillespie, etc).

Although Wilko gave us some great times and a dream of better things to come he couldn't repeat his miracle buys in the transfer market, he made major mistakes like Swede Thomas Brolin. Once again the whites faded into the role of also-rans hovering just above the relegation spot.

Other than these seasons the nineties were quite boring although we did have two great strikers at the club in Ghana International Tony Yeboah who scored goals for fun and when George Graham came in to replace Wilko he sighned and developed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

However Grahams negative style was never popular and he was eventually replaced by assistant David O'Leary and then we lived the dream (or did we).

Wednesday Update

Weight last week was 228.1lb

Weight today is 227lb which is a loss of 1.1lb again another move in the right direction.

This coming week could be difficult as after work today I am at a retirement do and the beer will be flowing.

On Friday a few of us from work are off out in York for a meal (organised by the lovely Vicky in accounts). We are off to a Cuban restaurant and I don't know what its like as I've not been before, should be fun though.
I am not off to a Club afterwards though as I have to be up the following morning to drive to Scarborough (I'm doing a Table Tennis coaching session for them).

Please Choose

Three Posts tonight (must be bored) -

I have been thinking of Changing my profile photo so I would be intersted what my blogging friends think.
Please choose one of the following :-

a) Restaurant in Chicago (one blogger may recognise where I'm sat last October).

b) Beale Street Memphis

c) Keep current photo policemans baton

d) When I was Good Looking (even though I say it myself)

My blogging friends

I have now been blogging for just over five months, I was reluctant at first but I am really pleased I allowed myself to be persuaded to do it.

For somebody who wasn't sure about it I have wrote over 130 articles in that and commented on numerous other blogs. Looking at my profile it seems I have had 726 views.

More important than these facts is I have made a number of friends who regularly contribute to my blog and in turn I comment on theirs. Some of you may notice the order of my top bloggers has changed and may ask the question why ?

Origionally the list was basically the order that people first wrote to my blog but I have changed this to the order of the number of times the person as commented during the last month (July). I intend to adjust this every month, with new people who comment a minimum of three occasions been added (welcome HMR) and any not commenting at all in the month will be removed (but saved elsewhere).

Most blog comments last month was Airliebird (16) which isn't too surprising as I have done a lot of soccer articles and I think we have a bit in common there. Rachel (15) is always a good contributor and a lovely girl.
Jenny (13) who is a real nice person is also a good contributor while Kristine & Modigli (both 7)are two ladies whose opinions I really respect, smashing people.

Most of the others have contributed more in the past but have eased off recently even on their own blogs for various reasons, work commitments, computor faults, blog breaks, etc.

Thanks everyone for your input I really do consider you friends, I hope my list grows.

15 years in the Wilderness

Following the aftermath of Paris Leeds United went into a slow decline, the main reasons the players that served us well were getting old and replcements were needed. Prior to Paris Leeds could attract the big stars but this was a club that was now banned from Europe so the stars turned their backs.

The man given the task of rebuilding the Club was Jimmy Armfield an honest man who did his best in almost impossible circumstances.

This was also a period of my life when I went on a great adventure. For the next 6/7 years I lived and breathed my Football Club travelling the length of the country to support my chosen team.

We still had some good players during this period but we never really competed for trophys but this didn't stop me and many like me been proud of them all. We are not stupid people we know those playing ran their hearts out for the club.

On my travels I found following the Paris riot Leeds fans had become a target for hatred, they were seen as legitimate targets for the local thugs in the cities we visited, everyone wanted to take the Leeds fans on. I found this out on the first match following Paris when we travelled to Aston Villa in Birmingham. A group of Leeds fans were outside the ground when suddenly Villa supporters attacked with bottles.

Eventually about 1979 Armfield was replaced by Jimmy Adamson and basically he was a crap manager and the club went into a spiralling decline which eventually took us down into the 2nd division.

Before this happend I was lucky to be about to see the club return to Europe in 1979 and I travelled to Malta to see them face Valletta City for a comfortable 1st round victory in the Eufa Cup. Alas the team wasn't good enough and they fell at the 2nd hurdle to Craova in Rumania, I couldn't afford that trip.

During these years I saw hooliganism grow starting with a number of gangs following London Clubs plus a few other areas. One of the biggest group of supporters with a bad reputation were our immortal enemy Manchester United. I had many scary moments on my travels but was never discouraged from supporting my team.

Yes "The English disease" Football hooliganism was growing and organised gangs were attaching themselves to Clubs. Leeds gang the Service Crew were amongst the most well known and caused problems up and down the country. One big clash that made the national headlines happend in Londons Picadilly Circus when the Service Crew Clashed with the infamous Chelsea Headhunters.

Anyway back to the Football we did have some star players during this period two that spring to mind are Tony Currie and Arthur Graham who were awesome talents who were worshipped by the fans.

We moved into the eighties this was a period I actually stopped going to soccer matches through other sporting commitments but Leeds decline continued despite a string of ex players from the Revie era taking the reigns (Clarke, Gray, Bremner, etc). Once again the club found itself in the 2nd flight of English Football.

As the decade came to an end once again the club turned the corner as Sgt Wilko (Howard Wilkinson) arrived.

Next - The Wilko era
