Wednesday Weigh In - Back in Front

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Last Weeks Weight - 216lb

Todays Actual Weight - 214.4lb

Loss/Gain this week - -1.6lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 4.6lb

Today's Target Weight - 215lb

Loss/Gain against Target - -0.6lb

Just done my weekly weigh in and I'm pleased to report a loss of 1.6lb this week, that puts me 0.6lb in front of my target. The pleasing thing is I'm not yet exercising so any loss I consider quite good. I know there is still a long way to go but I reckon I'm winning this war (so far).

My Foot (gout) is feeling a lot better but my left knee is a bit swollen and painfull, saying that its improved significantly over the last couple of days. I am planning to do a bit of walking this weekend to just get some exercise. Still not sure about my tennis elbow not really tested it but I reckon I'll play in a local league Table Tennis match within the next two weeks to test it out.

Reading this you all must think I'm a physical wreck but its just a case of everything happening at once.

Music Monday - Big in America ?

Well as quite a number of my blog friends are American I've decided this week to feature some of your big acts that have had limited success in the UK. I have actually picked four bands/songs that are massive in their own field, I like them but surprisingly weren't massive chart hits over here. Yes you read that right four this week as I couldn't decide which to leave out.

They are actualy all different styles so hopfully something here for everyone.

1. Eagles "Hotel California" - Was this massive groups biggest hit in the UK but still only reached No8 back in 1977, It was a No1 in the US chart though. It actually recieved a Grammy for record of the year in 1978.
The Eagles were formed in Los Angeles and the main members of the group were Don Henley (Lead Vocals & Drums) plus Guitarists Joe Walsh & Don Felder.
Rolling Stone Magazine has this song No49 in the all time greats list.

2. Ramones "Baby I love You" - The Ramones from Queens in New York are often credited with been the first Punk Rock group (I think The Clash would argue) but this song is not really Punk. It is a cover version of Phil Spectors classic origionall released by "The Ronnettes".
Anyway it reached No8 in the UK in 1980 and The group were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
I'm sorry to say three of the groups origional members are no longer with us today Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman) died of Lympophema, Johnny (John cummins) died of Prostrate Cancer and Dee Dee (Douglas Colvin) Overdosed on Heroin.

3. Lynard Skynard "Sweet Home Alabama" - This well known Classic was surprisingley never released as a single in the UK but a classic all the same, it did reach No8 in the US chart. It was wrote as a answer to Neil Young's songs "Southern Man" & "Alabama" which criticised the South as been evil.
The Group originated from Florida in the seventies when many southern Rock groups were coming to the fore with songwriters Ronnie Van Zant & Gary Rossington from that state, co writer Ed King was from California.
It was only in March last year that the group were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

4. Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut" - Probably the best Rockabilly Group of all time these schoolboy friends from Long Island New York. This is my favorite of theirs and I've heard so many covers, the origional only made No11 in the UK chart but reached No3 in the US in 1981.
The group were Brian Setzer (Lead Vocals & Guitar), Lee Rocker (Bull Bass) & Slim Jim Phantom (Drums). Ok all though I love all todays choices I'm naming this as my favorite but its a close call.

So what do you reckon, watch the clips below and tell us which of these is you favorite ?

Eagles - Hotel California - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 1998

Classic

Ramones - Baby, I Love you

Superb

Sweet Home Alabama

Great Song

Stray cats - Stray cats strut

A Classic

Sunday Sport - This Weeks News

Following last weeks sports report one of my Blog friends Regina pointed out by e'mail (she is still having problems with blogger letting her comment on some blogs) that I hadn't mentioned the American Football in particular her City of residence team the Chicago Bears have reached the Super Bowl following their victory over New Orleans Saints (sorry Rebecca).

They will be facing Indeanapalis Colts who took out New England Patriots to reach this final.

The reason I didn't mention it was that the post was wrote before I knew the results so I will say well done to the Bears and Colts today.

However I do know the Bears arn't Regina's home town team thats actually the Oakland Raiders which is also Airliebirds favorite team not that I've worked out why. Well todays news is about the Raiders who have just appointed a new coach in 31year old Lane Kiffin (pictured below) who will probably need to produce a miracle to turn around the teams fortunes. This season they had a 2-14 record one of the worst in the league.
This is finals weekend in the Australian Open Tennis and well done to Serena Williams who played brilliantly to win the Ladies Singles. In the final she beat the lovely Maria Sharapova who obviously in the photo below is contemplating whether to have a break from Tennis and concentrate on having my Children.

The Mens final was of course won in straight sets by Roger Federer of Switzerland. This bloke is absolutely awesome one of the all time greats in the making. He just doesn't even drop sets and there are some good players out there, he's just a class above. He is the first man to win a Grand Slam event without dropping a set since Bjorn Borg in 1980. It is his 10th Grand Slam title moving him to 5th in the all time list.

His victim in the final was Chilean Fernando Gonzalez who has had a great tournament himself, but you can only say one thing "Well done Roger" and take your hat off to a great champion.

In England its the 4th round of the FA Cup and the Mighty whites are already out so I'm not really interested who wins so I'll post a picture of the 1972 winners, I was among (aged14) the 100,000 that attended the 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Still on soccer this week the Red Vermin have been moaning that a spy plane has been passing over their training sessions and virtually accusing all their rivals. What a load of poppycock its probably somebody just looking for a suitable place to dump a load of manure.

Fed up

This weekend I'm feeling sorry for myself, why you may ask ?

Well its York Table Tennis Championships and I'm not playing due to my Tennis Elbow, I should be defending the five titles (Veterans Singles, Veterans Doubles, Divisional, Mixed Doubles and Mens Doubles) I won last year when I had a great tournament but this time I have had to withdraw.
I would have actually been competing in eight events, the above 5 plus Hard Bat singles & Doubles plus the big one the Mens Singles.

I've always had a dream that I could make history and win all eight events at the same tournament, arguably physically impossible as I would have to win over thirty matches without a single loss over the weekend but I always believe my mental strength makes it possible.

I will go down to the event Sunday afternoon to support some of my team mates but it doesn't make me feel any happier about not competing myself.

I just want to clear up my aches and pains and compete.

Management

One of my work colleagues sent me this today, I thought it was quite funny -

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted:

"Excuse me, can you help me ? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am.

"The woman below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 Degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be in IT," said the balloonist.

"I am," replied the woman, "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information and the fact is I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything, you've delayed my trip."

The woman below responded, "You must be in Management."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my friggin' fault!

Embarrasing Meetings

Twice recently I've been in the embarrasing position when somebody comes up to you and starts talking like a long lost friend and I hadn't a clue who they are.

The first turned out to be a lad who turned out to be someone I coached at Table Tennis about 20 years ago and he stayed talking for ages. I just kept agreeing with what he was saying all the time racking my brain trying to work out who he was.
Later I did a bit of research and found out who he was which was quite lucky because I bumped into him again and could use a name.

The 2nd incident happend in the dentists (I had a check up the other day) when a lady said "Alright Mick" and started talking to me. She was quite attractive and knew me but I still haven't a clue who she was, I'm still working on that one.

I remember this happening to one of my mates a few years back and he was playing along for ages until the stranger asked "Aint you going to introduce me to your friends ?". My mate had to then ask who he was, I creased myself laughing.

Has this ever happend to any of you ?

Wednesday Weigh in - Only a Draw

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Last Weeks Weight - 216lb

Todays Actual Weight - 216lb

Loss/Gain this week - 0lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 3lb

Today's Target Weight - 216lb

Loss/Gain against Target - 0lb

I'm a little dissapointed because I haven't lost any weight this week but at the same time I can be pleased not to have gained. 216lb this week is also bang on target in my year long plan so I suppose its ok, but its nice to be in front.

I think I've done ok with the food intake and the reson I've not lost weight is because I've done less exercise due to my current aches & pains (Gout, Tennis elbow, etc.). No excuse though if I'm not exercising I need to eat less so I'll have to sort that out. I do hope to get back into some sort of exercise regime asap.

When it comes to health I had a bit of good news today, it was my annual medical check up at work and I came through well. On the respiratary tests the machine told me I have the lung capacity of a 43 year old which isn't bad considering I'm 48 (and overweight). Last time I did this particular test was two years ago and surprisingly at 46 years old I had the lungs of a 46 year old. I give credit to my weight loss so far for the improvement and if I can stay on plan I'll be even younger next year (perhaps one day I'll be under 40 again).

Music Monday - "Dublin" Irelands Music City

Today its time to decide who are the best group/song to come out of Dublin a city probably not on the music map but here are three monster groups to choose from.

So here are the three I've picked :-

Thin Lizzy - Formed in Dublin in 1969 by Bassist Singer Phil Lynott one of the first Black Men to front a Hard Rock Group. The origional group was made up of Lynott, guitarist Eric Bell, Electric Organist Eric Wrixon and Drummer Brian Downey. Although they didn't stay together long and over the years the group have had many changes in personnel. At one stage Ultravox front man Midge Ure was one of their guitarists.
Anyway in 1971 the group moved to London due to lack of success in Dublin and two years later they had their first chart hit with the guitar classic "Whiskey in the Jar" which reached No6.
They had to wait another three years for their 2nd hit when they reached No8 in 1976 with "The Boys are back in town". From this time they had many other chart successes but surprisingly never had a number one hit.
Over the years Thin Lizzy have been credited as the first group to use "The double Lead Guitar Harmony techqnique" on their songs. This fact isn't quite true as it was first used by Wishbone Ash although Lizzy did make it well known. Some Americans groups including Lynard Skynard and The Allman Brothers use a similar teqnique.
Sadly Lynott died of an Drugs overdose in 1986.
I'm choosing their first hit "Whiskey in the Jar" as the song to play.

Boomtown Rats - The pioneers of Irish Punk Music where actually a very good act in the days before Sir Bob Geldof became a politition. They had numerous hits in the UK Between 1977 and 1984 including two number one's.
Their first chart succes was with "Looking after No1" but the it was their first song to hit the top spot that made history in 1978, the song "Rat Trap" made them the first Irish group to top the UK chart.
Their 2nd No1 "I don't like Monday's" caused a little controversy the following year as it was about an American Schoolgirl who had flipped, took a gun to school and murdered her fellow pupils.
As well as Geldof the other members of the group are on keyboards Johnny Fingers who always wore his pyjammas on stage, Guitarists Garry Roberts & Gerry Lott, Bassist Pete Briquette plus drummer Simon Crow.
In recent years Geldof's music has somewhat been overshadowed by his charity work but the Rats were a very good group.
I've chosen their first No1 "Rat Trap" to play.

U2 - When talking about top notch Irish Groups you can't leave out U2. They actually started out around the same time as The Boomtown Rats as a small unknown Dublin group called "The Hype". The soon changed their name and the rest lets say is history and they are still one of todays top groups.
However it wasn't while 1981 that they had their first chart hit with "Fire" which only reached No35. Their first top ten hit was in 1983 with "New Years Day" but despite many more top ten success it wasn't while 1988 before they topped the chart with "Desire".
Despite the success of their singles its in Albums that U2 stand out with 6 US and 9 UK No1's. World wide they have sold over 170million albums more than any other act, they have also won an amazing 22 Grammy awards.
The group of Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jnr are listed No22 on the all time great groups by Rolling Stone Magazine.
The song I'm choosing is my favorite U2 song "Angel of Harlem" which reached No9 in the UK chart in 1988.

So Listen, enjoy then tell me which you like best of the three following tracks.

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar

Brilliant Stuff

The Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap

Better than I don't like Mondays ?

U2 - Angel Of Harlem

Love this song

Sport Sunday - Around the World

We'll start Down Under with the Australian Tennis Championships and at last its starting to look like Britain may have a player capable of competing for titles at world level.

Scotlands Andy Murray has marched into the last 16 where he will face Spanish star Rafael Nadal. Murray has done well all season and it promises to be a great match. However in the Ladies game the Brits don't seem able to compete so I'll have to post a photo of Tournament favorite Maria Sharapova (Russia). There's something about her I like just can't put my finger on it.

Change of Sport to boxing and England Ricky Hatton has just regained the IBF World Light-Welterweight title against Colombian Juan Urango in Las Vegas. Hatton has been a great ambassador for the sport throughout his career, well done Ricky.

On to Snooker and last week I mentioned the maximum 147 scored by Chinese teenager Ding well the 19 year old has gone on to reach the final beating no other than Stephen Hendry "arguably the greatest player of all time" on route.

But in todays final Ding will face the Rocket Man Ronnie O'Sullivan. An inform Ronnie is almost unstoppable it should be a classic match.

So what is going on in my part of the world, well in Yorkshire we currently have the World Short track Speed skating ( in Sheffield). And before anyone asks I can't name any of the skaters pictured below.

So on to Soccer and I'm afraid Leeds lost again yesterday 3-2 at home to West Brom (first time they have won at Elland Road for nearly 30 years). We are now deeply in the shit and need to start winning asap.

Good things we can take from yesterdays match was that both goals were scored by new signings Tor Andre Flo & Alan Thompson on their home debuts. Icelandic International Gylfi Einarrson a player I rate got on for the last 15 minutes. We have a break next week so time for manager Dennis Wise to settle in all the new boys.

At least Dennis showed some passion when he got sent off for pushing one of their players, we could do with him on the pitch.

Finally I've just read another former England player will be following David Beckham to the USA at the end of the season. It is strongly rummoured Robbie Fowler will be joining one of my Blog friends "Joel" teams DC United. Well Joel what you will get is a tidy footballer with the ability to score goals, Robbie doesn't do an awfull lot around the park but in the oppositions box he can be leathal.

Robbies main claim to fame that he proudly boasts is that he has played for the three clubs that hate Manchester United the most (Liverpool, Manchester City & of course Leeds).

Vacation Decision

I've started trying to plan my next trip to North America and have been checking out prices in various cities. I'm provisionally planning to visit two Cities around late April/early May.

I'm looking at 12 nights total staying in decent hotels in the City Centres (I don't hire a car on vacation) and trying to get a price under £1,000 including flights.

At least one of the Cities I want to be new to me but if both are thats ok. So far I can only get cross Atlantic flights (from Manchester) at a reasonable price to Chicago (BMI or American) or Boston (American). Their are flights to Philadelphia (US Airways) or Atlanta (Delta) but those companies have not dropped their prices yet.

The best total deal prices I can get so far are :-

6 Nights Boston (Milner Hotel) + 6 Nights Philadelphia (Comfort Inn) - £1113
Milner is only a 2star but has decent reviews and includes Breakfast.
Comfort Inn as some very good reviews.

6 Nights Boston (Milner Hotel) + 6 Nights Washington (Red Roof) - £1117
Red Roof is also a budget hotel but the reviews are good.

5 Nights Chicago (Allerton Hotel) + 7 Nights Baltimore (Wyndham) - £1142
Allerton is a top quality hotel right on Michegan Ave
Wyndham 3 star again is a good hotel with good reviews.

I've also looked at linking these Cities with Austin, New Orleans, Seattle, Atlanta and these are the other possible combinations £1240 (Chicago/Seattle), £1312 (Chicago/New Orleans), £1274 (Chicago/Atlanta), £1241 (Chicago/Philadelphia), £1330 (Chicago/Austin) £1286 (Boston/Chicago).

I could dowgrade hotels a bit but to be honest if I'm travelling so far I always try to get somewhere decent in a good area.

I am expecting the flight prices to Atlanta & Philadelphhia to come down so that will open up a lot more potential combinations.

One problem with with travelling solo is you still have to pay for a Double room so it is always expensive. Now if any of you unattached female bloggers are free I've just come up with an idea (ok worth a try).

Actually one of my blog friends (Rachel) is currently doing some research for me and finding out the best area to stay in Atlanta.

I have another question for any of you (I think Jenny will be able to help) - What is the weather normally like in Boston in late April ?

Battered Britain

Today virtually the whole country has been battered by Gale Force winds reaching upto 99mph in places. A number of people have been reported killed, Thousands of homes are without Electricity, Buildings have been damaged.

These are a few pictures of the storms :-

We have actually had a couple of Power Cuts at work which are catastrophic for our process, many trees locally have been uprooted. On a bright note I've got away with it so far with no damage at home but two people at work have lost fences.

On a subject change I played Table Tennis in York last night but my elbow was really painfull and getting worse. I had to conceed two matches and the team then fell apart and we lost to the bottom side. I reckon I'm going to be out injured for a few weeks, I've had to withdraw from Yorkshire League this Sunday and the York Championships the following weekend. I would have been defending 5 titles in that tournament and amnot in a good mood. I've played competitevly for over 30 years and never had a prolonged injury, I am really pissed off about it.

I'm off to the Pub with a couple of friends tonight so I'll catch up with all your blogs tomorrow.

Wednesday Weigh in -

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Todays Actual Weight - 216lbs

This Weeks Target Weight - 217lbs

Loss/Gain this week - -1.5lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 3lb

Well I'm sort of pleased I've lost another 1.5lb this week so I'm now 1lb inside my target weight (or one week in hand).
As far as weight loss is concerned I've bought myself a new Bathroom Scale so I no longer have to weigh myself at work then take off an allowance for my clothes.
I pleasing thing about this loss is I didn't eat too well at the weekend and wasn't so sure the result would be a positive.

So all I can say is "Another battle won but the war goes on".

Music Monday - 1979 a year for the Ladies

As all of you that read my blog you will know I was interested in music throughout my teens in the 1970's, basically I went from Glam to New wave throughout this period of my life. Ok my taste has matured and I actually like a lot of stuff from all era's but its your teen/early 20's that shape what you like.
Well I reckon 1979 was quite a significant period for Ladies fronting groups and this week I'm going to give you 3 from that period to choose from.

1. The Pretenders - Formed by Lead singer Chrissie Hynde at the tail end of the punk movement in 1978 and they had their first UK chart hit in 79 with the Ray Davis composition "Stop your Sobbing" which only reaced No34. The group went on to have many other hits including 3 number one's and 6 others reacing he top ten.
They also had their first chart topper later the same year with "Brass in Pocket".
Although the group are actually thought of as British Hynde is actually American born and raised in Ohio and didn't move to the UK until 1973.
The early group members were British with James Honeymoon-Scott on Lead Guitar and Bassist Pete Farndon joining Hynde.
For their first release they never had a drummer so session muscician and driving instructor Gerry Mackduff played on the origional recording of "Stop your Sobbing". He was eventually replaced by Martin Chambers.
In fact Hynde is the only origional member of the group left today both Honeymoon-Scott and Farndon died of Drug overdoses in the early eighties.

Ok you have guessed the song we are posting is "Stop your Sobbing".

2. The Tourists - This is another group that had its first chart success in 1979 and was formed by muscicians Pete Coombs and Dave Stewart. They soon recruited Annie Lennox a Scottish classical singer who had dropped out of her course at the Royal academy of music.
They also recruited Malaysian Bassist Eddie Chin and drummer Jim Tooney.
They only existed for about 2 years before Stewart and Lennox moved away to form the Eurythmics and gain fame and fortune.
For the record the Tourists only had 5 songs make the UK chart with only two of them making the top ten. However I thought they were pretty good and actually saw them play once at Bridlington Spa.
Their highest chart hit was a cover version of the 1964 Dusty Springfield Classic "I only want to be with you", for the record it had been covered 3 years earlier in 1976 by The Bay City Rollers.
The Tourists also reached the Australian top ten with this song but it only made No83 in the US so I'd better give my American friends a 2nd chance today.

One peice of trivia surrounding this song - All 3 acts Springfield, Rollers and The Tourists reached the exact same chart position No4 with this song, amazing.

3. Blondie - When talking about ladies fronting rock groups in the late seventies we can't leave out Debbie Harry & Blondie.
Although they first charted a year earlier (4 times) they had their first UK No1 with Heart of Glass in 1979. Their first ever chart success was actually in 1977 in the Australian chart when X-Offender reached No5.
They went on to have a string of hits, 5 No1's & and numerous other chart successes until they broke up in 1982. They have since reformed and returned to the UK in 1999 with another No1 Maria. The group have had too many to mention succesful albums.
The group is American from New York and the origional members are Chris Stein (Guitar), Clem Burke (Drums), Jimmy Destri (Keyboards) & Gary Valentine (Bass). Of course then there is Debbie who was actually a former Waitress and playboy bunny. Her first group was an all girl band called the Stilletoes which broke up in 1973.

The song I'm posting is the groups 2nd UK no1 of 1979 "Sunday Girl" believe it or not this song was never released as a single in the US, I reckon somebody at Chrysalis records ended up looking for a new job.

So watch the clips below and tell me which group/song you prefer ?

Ok post a day late, not my fault Youtube wouldn't post last night.

The Pretenders - Stop Your Sobbing

Fantastic Stuff

The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You

Great Song

SUNDAY GIRL - BLONDIE

Bonny Lass

Sport Sunday - The Chinese are coming

For so long the sport Snooker has been dominated at world level by people from the British Isles with a sprinkling of opositition coming from Commenwealth countries like Canada, Australia & South Africa.

Well we have heard for a long time that the sport is popular in China and its only a matter of time before they take over at the top.

Well I have just seen something that makes me think they have arrived. I just turned on my Television and the masters snooker tournament was on, playing Ding Junhui a 19 year old from China. Ok playing is one thing, winning another but the first frame I watched unbelievably he rattled in a maximum break of 147.
F*****g hell a inexperienced 19 year old can't do that, its only ever been done in this tournament once before and that was in 1984 by Canadian Kirk Stephens.

In fact in all tournaments I can only think of televised 147's on 6 occasions (White, Thorburn, Hendry & O'Sullivan), there [probably is a couple I've missed.

All I can say is well done Ding.

While we mention the Masters there is call to change the Tournaments name in honour of 27 year old Leeds player Paul Hunter who sadly lost his battle with Cancer earlier this year. Paul won this title on three occasions.

What do you think ?

You thought with Leeds United not having a match this weekend due to the stupid Brummies trying to resurface their pitch I wouldn't mention the sport.

You were wrong because today is the big Yorkshire Derby in the Ladies game Doncaster Belles versus Leeds United.
A 5-2 victory for Leeds saw them overtake Arsenal at the top of the Womens premier league for a couple of hours. Player of the match was Lucy Ward who scored twice.

However the girls didn't stay top for long as Arsenal hammered Sunderland 9-0.

One of the versions of the World darts is also on television this afternoon, the final is an all English affair with the National captain Dave "Wolfie" Adams playing 50 year old outsider Phil Nixon. Phil was 150-1 at the bookies at the start of the tournament.
I usually post something for one of my blog friends well today is the turn of Rebecca and I'll mention her beloved team the New Orleans Saints beat Philadelphia 27-24.I almost forgot to mention the world of soccer has seen two major deals this week involving midfield players in their thirties. Most importantly Alan Thompson has moved from Celtic to play for my club Leeds United (obviously he wanted to play for a big club).

And we have to mention David Beckham' money spinning move to help the kids of America. The Real Madrid player is moving to LA Galaxy and joking apart I think he will actually get the MLS the publicity it needs to become a major sport in North America. He is a decent player and was a good England captain in his prime but publicity is what he is about.
Welcome to the World Game to all my North American friends and remember to encourage the kids to buy Leeds shirts (not Manchester United at any cost).

Today I will have a moan.

Moan 1 -
It is now Saturday 3pm and I should be glued to the radio listening to Leeds United beat league leaders Birmingham City (their actually one of the few teams we have beaten this year). But no the match was called off two days ago, why you may ask.
Well basically Birmingham City decided to resurface their pitch last Monday and because the workmen wouldn't go out in the rain it isn't finished.
Again its our supporters that suffer who have already paid for their transport and match tickets that suffer. Birmingham say they can use their match tickets for the rearranged match what a great offer. But the match will now be played in midweek when most people will be working and not able to travel.
I'll suggest they may be another motive for this cancellation, it could be the fact that Birmingham have a lot of injuries at present.

Moan 2 -
Former England captain David Beckham is going to finish his footballing career in the USA for LA Galaxy and get paid a ridiculous salary of $1,000,000 per month. But this is not my moan good luck to him if he can get some loony to pay him that but don't come out with a statement saying "I'm not going for the money I'm going to help kids".
David if you want to help kids give that f*****g money to a childrens charity.
As for the fools that are paying Mr Publicity what are you getting, well a footballer that can't run, can't tackle, can't drible, can't head, can't get a game for Real Madrid and has been dropped by England but he does takes a decent free kick. The US are trying to develop their league, the rest of the world thought you were doing ok but now they are laughing.
Don't bet against Posh (she was the spice girl with even less talent than the others) been in an hollywood movie this year.

Moan 3 -
Bush is sending more troops to Iraq and the British are staying, no thats not my moan. My moan is I'm sick of all the perfect people that reckon to be do gooders that rant on about us pulling out.
Whether you argue if we should have gone in the first place is irrelevant the fact is we did and have created a civil war. We have a duty to try and sort it out. My gut feeling is if we pulled out now it would be total chaos with many more getting killed than now.
Yes sure we keep losing some of our brave soldiers but it isn't normally them boys that are moaning. They choose to join the Army and I'm afraid sometimes that involves doing your job in dodgy places.

Moan 4 -
English weather sucks.

Moan 5 -
I feel old.
My right foot hurts (gout not fully cleared up since december).
My left Knee hurts (loose cartlidge)

Quick Post Tonight

Just a quicky tonight as I am getting picked up for my TT match shortly.

Today we are been battered with very high winds and some areas have flood warnings in place. I know a few people have lost their roofs to the wind and a number of Lorries have been blown over. It is supposed to die down by the morning (I hope).

Wednesday Weigh in - 2007 Plan starts

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Todays Actual Weight - 217.5lbs

This Weeks Target Weight - 218lbs

Loss/Gain to Weekly Target - -0.5lbs

Loss so far in 2007 - 1.5lb

Well decent start got myself inside my target by 0.5lb so can't complain.

We all talk about Food and Drink that we like but are not good for the weight loss so here is a list of Fruit and Veg I don't mind.

Weekly I normally have the following (amount varies) :-
Apples
Bannanas
Oranges
Cherries
Blueberries
Broccoli
Peas
Carrots
Sprouts
Cauliflower
Tomatoes
Lettuce
Onion

Occasionally I have the Following :-
Strawberries
Pineapple
Parsnips
Celery

I don't like the following :-
Green Beans
Grapefruit
Sweetcorn

I can't eat but like :-
Rasberries (Allergy).

So you see not all my eating is unhealthy.

Whats happening in my life at present ?
1. We are still expecting some sort of announcement at work.
2. I made my debut for my new Pool team (Grey Horse Sharks) on Monday night, I won my singles but me and Lofty lost at Doubles. The team won 7-2 and after one match we are top of the league.
3. Played Table Tennis for my team in the York League last night and won all my 3 matches, the team won 6-4. Trouble is I tweaked a muscle in my arm and it hurts somewhat, this morning when I got up I couldn't even straighten my arm but it is easing a lot now. I am playing another match in the Selby league tomorrow so I'll see how it goes.

Music Monday - British Groups of the Sixties

Well everyone thinks of "The Beatles", "Rolling Stones" or possibly "The Who" when talking about great British Groups of the 1960's. Although I will deal with these another week I'm going to deal with three others that I really like :-

1. The Kinks - Ray Davis is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, not only writing songs for his own group others from a later era have had hits with his work - David Watts (The Jam), Stop Your Sobbing (The Pretenders), All Day and all of the Night (The Stranglers) to name some.
He actually produced his first solo album "Other Peoples lives" only last year and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in Chicago last July.
For the record The Kinks had many chart hits including 3 number one hits and ten others reaching the UK top 10. Surprisingly their most famous song "Lola" which I love only reached No2.
The song I select to post a video of though is one that never even made the charts "Celluloid Heroes" perhaps some songs are just too good.

2. Small Faces - Another great group who influenced many that followed. These boys only had one No1 hit "All or Nothing" but another seven of their chart hits made the top ten.
Their most famous song is probably "Itchycoo Park" that made No 3 in the UK .
The group was made up of Vocalist Steve Marriott a former busker, Steve died in a house fire in 1991. Ronnie Lane who later went on with Keyboard player Ian McLagan to join Rod Stewart and form "The Faces". Lane died of MS in 1997. The 4th member was drummer Kenny Jones who went on to replace Keith Moon in "The Who"
However I'm picking neither of the songs mentioned earlier the one I'm posting is another Top Ten song "Tin Soldier" which made No9.

3. The Animals - One song sticks out from these boys from Newcastle "House of the Rising Sun" Which was a No1 both here and in the States. It was actually the first song from the UK (not written by Lennon and McCartney) to top the US chart. However surprisingly this song is not an origional it was wrote (composer unknown I believe) in the 1920's. However this awesome song suits lead singer Eric Burdons voice.
Although "House of the Rising Sun" was the groups only number one they did have many othher hits including 7 reaching the top ten.
Other members of the group included Alan Price (Keyboards), Chas Chandler (Bass), John Steel (Drums) and Hilton Valentine (Guitar).
Ok no prizes for guessing the song it could only be the one.

Same as last week please all vote for which you prefer from the clips posted below.

Today

I've just got back from our British League Table Tennis matches and can report decent results. We started the day in 2nd place 2 points behind Barrow, looking at the matches I thought Barrow would win both theirs so we would have to do the same.
First up we had a tough match with Formby but managed to win 6-2, I won both my games although one of them was very close. To our delight Elgre Nottingham put up a good performance to hold Barrow to a draw so we gained a point.
We had Elgre for our second match and knew it would be tough after the morning matches and they did the same to us attaining a 4-4 draw. Credit to them though because we led 2-0 and 4-2 and they never gave up. Again I took both my matches so came away pleased with a personal maximum.
While this was going on Barrow much to our surprise only drew with bottom Club "Hull St Marys" so we are now only one point behind. They are maybe getting a little nervous a point we made to them as they left (they seemed to enjoy our sarcasm, not).
So we go into the last weekend on February 24th & 25th with 4 matches to play including Barrow. In other words 4 wins will give us the title, it will be tough but we will be trying.

On the Blogging front some of my friends are still having problems with Beta, I've recieved an e'mail from "Hear me Roar" telling me she cannot comment, sounds like the same issue "Regina" is having.
She tells me she likes my last post on the Female Stress diet.

Whats Happening

Last night about 12 of us from work went out for another leaving do for my mate Lofty, just went for a drink in a few Pubs around town. He starts his new job on Monday. Hopfully I've not damaged the diet plans.

Tomorrow its FA Cup 3rd round, this is the stage where teams from the top two divisions join in with the smaller clubs that are left. Its a real big competition in England we won it in 1972, its not seeded so luck of the draw is so important. Leeds have been drawn away at West Bromwich Albion (from Birmingham) who are in the same division but a lot higher than us. We have just signed some new players, we won on New Years day so there is a case for been optimistic. All our ticket allocation (2,000) as been sold and they are making some more available for Leeds fans on the day, they will make some noise believe me. I'll be actually listening on the Radio.

Sunday I'm playing British League Table Tennis, we are at Halton Auto Quest Stadium (Widnes Rugby Ground) and have two matches against "Elgre Nottingham" and Lancashire Outfit "Formby TTC". If we can achieve two victories we will still be in the Championship hunt.

Monday Me and Lofty are playing Pool in the local league. We have changed Pub and playing for a new team. I don't know any of the other players so should be making some new friends. I'm looking forward to it.

We are sort of expecting some annoncements at work next week but we'll have to wait and see what the future holds.

Wednesday Weigh In - The 2007 Plan

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Todays Actual Weight - 219lbs

Todays Target Weight - 219lbs

Loss/Gain to Weekly Target - 0lbs

Ok 0.5lb up from last week but it has been New Year Celebration time.

Now here is my weight loss plan for 2007, I've decided to look at the overall picture rather than on a weekly basis. This doesn't mean I won't be monitering on a weekly basis but I will be judging how I'm doing against the overall plan rather than having weekly ups and downs. This hopfully work with my competitive nature, I'll try stay below the weekly target weight (get well ahead I can have a reward week).

My theory is during my normal weeks I should be able to maintain a loss of 1lb per week (next weeks target is 218lb). I also plan to have 8 weeks vacation this year (2week*4times) and I expect to put on about 5lb on each of these fortnights.
So looking at this in real terms in the 44 normal weeks I will expect to lose 44lbs, however I will put on 20lb (4*5lb) during the 8 vacation weeks.

If you are now with me I will be taking 1lb per week off on my 2007 plan weight each week upto a vacation then adding 5lb for the first weigh in following my return. I will be trying to keep pace or do better than these targets.

Simple maths - by this time next year there should be at least 24lb less of me(year target 197lb) . Not a lot but taking it slow and been realistic should help me keep it off in the long term.

Music Monday - You Decide

Well its a new year and instead of me giving a CD review I thought about creating a music debate. I will post three acts from the same era and you judge which you think is the best (rank them 1 to 3 with comments of course).

Now as anyone noticed how the majority of modern Rock acts never seem to smile either on stage or in Photographs, I think its to do with image.

Anyway for todays debate I'm going back to my schoolboy days and the era of Glam Rock (early 70's), this is when music was fun and you dressed accordingly. I know many of you are far too young to remember but believe me if we dressed the same nowadays we would get shot.

Anyway the big argument at the time was over which group was the kings of Glam and it always seemed to come down to three groups so these are what I will post.

1. T. Rex - 20th Century Boy
2. Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
3. Slade - Cum on Feel the Noise

Watch, Listen, Judge, from the 3 clips posted below this post.

Blogging Friends

Its 1st of January and some of you may have noticed I've changed the order of my Blogging friends once again. I try to do this each month based on the number of comments each person has made on my blog in the previous month.

Not a lot changes at the top with Rachel still my top blogger with 19 comments but it was really close. Airliebird stayed in 2nd spot and was only one comment behind with 18 while Jenny jumped back to 3rd with 17. Rachel also put a number of comments on my San Francisco pictures on My Photo Blog but I didn't count these.

Two others also got into double figures with their comments both Cactusfreek & Rebecca weighed in with 14.

Quite a few other bloggers have had a bit of a break in the last month but hopfully will be blogging a lot in 2007.

And I nearly forgot welcome to Celtic Girl who has commented on my last couple of Posts.

Thanks to everyone that comments.
