Update from Seattle.

Having a good time it seems a nice City, safe with plenty to see and do during the day. I'm a bit tired as I've done a fair amount of walking (best way to see the place) and tere are a lot of steep hills and of course I've been trying a few beers each night.
Actually I haven't been too impressed with the nightlife, Friday and Saturday was busy but couldn't fingd much good live music. Some of the bar staff seem to have a bit of an attitude giving the impression there not bothered which is very unusual for American Cities in my experience.
Saying that I went out last night and the girl that served me was really nice and chatty, they called her Liz. However the place was dead, I don't just mean that bar I don't think anyone drinks on a Sunday in Seattle.
I've been up the Space Needle which is a good view as there are no tall buildings close buy. Yesterday I visited Woodland Park which as a good Zoo, ok I'm not a Zoo person but went in anyway because its supposed to be one of the boiggest. Also in the Park is Green Lake which as a walking track around it (I reckon about 3 miles), it is a really scenic part of the City.
It is a real nice neighbourhood with some beutiful houses.
Today I've just walk miles along the bay front it was quite enjoyable with some cracking views, I've took a few photos I'll post later.
So far I haven't seen any rain in the "Rainy City" in fact its been sunny but the forcast says rain tomorrow so I'm going to get the bus to the "Museum of Flight" it sounds like it'll be very interesting.
Thats all for now I'm in a cafe, the hotel has internet but is ridiculously slow and expensive.

Just a Quickie

I've not much time so just a quickie to say I arrived ok albeit very late as my plane from Chicago to Seattle was nearly four hours delayed. I didn't get to my hotel until midnight which was 24 hours from leaving my hotel in Manchester airport.

Just finding my way around the City today, just been to Pike Place Market and you can buy just about anything there. Like most American Cities I'm already sick of been approached by beggars, but you soon get used to it.

Only one real funny incident to report so far, that was in Chicago airport when a bloke in front of me was struggling down the esculator with two large pieces of luggage. When he got to the bottom instead of moving on he decided to stop and with peopl behind him packed coming down I just crashed into the back of him while others crashed into me. A few went arse over tit it was quite hilarious.

I'll post later in the week if I get chance.

Seattle Here I Come

Well Tomorrow I'll be leaving for my first vacation of the year and I'll be crossing the Atlantic again. On this visit I'm going to Seattle and its another new City for me. Actually I don't know anyone who has been so I've been reading up on the things to see and do. I leave home after work on Wednesday to travel by train to Manchester where I'll be staying over at Bewleys Hotel at the Airport. I've stayed at this hotel before and its ok and walking distance from the terminals, it has a good bar and restaurant but there is a Irish Pub next door that I usually visit.

Thursday morning I fly first to Chicago (8+ hours) then following a four hour stopover I fly on to Seattle (4+ hours). So I'll be travelling over 16 hours and although I'm due to arrive at 7.30pm with the 8 hour time difference it will be like 3.30am to me. I'll be pretty knackered so I'll get a quick shower and maybe grab a meal in the hotel restaurant and get an early night.

While in Seattle I'll be Staying at the "Sixth Avenue Inn" which is right in the City centre and within walking distance of many attractions. The Hotel has its own Bar and Grill plus a seperate Sports Bar.I've been reading up about the many places I could visit while in the City and so far musts seem to be :- Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, Experience Music Project, Seattle Center, Museum of Flight & Seattle Aquarium. I may even go whale watching !

I like to do a bit of walking and visiting parks which Seattle seems to have a lot Discovery Park is one I intend to visit and another is Woodfield Park which also has a zoo. I think there are a few good cycle routes so maybe I'll hire a bike one day.

Nightlife looks good and I've found a list of interesting Bars some good for food and others with live music all within reasonable walking distance from my hotel, Seattle Center, Pioneer Square and Pike Place market all seem to have good nightlife around them but there are other areas.

One of the things I've not yet done when in the States is attend a sports event and I see that the Baseball team is at home while I'm in the city, they play both Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago White Sox. Although I'm not really a baseball fan I feel I should attend a match to see what people get excited about.

However the Sounders soccer team are also at home to PortlandTimbers while I'm there so I will probably see how they compare, I think they are the 2nd level down after the MLS. I'll be wearing my Leeds shirt of course.

I leave town on Monday 7th May flying home to via Chicago, I've only 1hour 25 minutes between flights so if my first is late I may even end up spending a night in Chicago at the expense of the airline (I should be so lucky).

I hope I'll meet some interesting people like I usually do on my trips but I'm sure you'll hear all about it.

I don't know if I'll get access to the net in Seattle but if I do I'll try post some updates as I go and obviously check out a few blogs of my friends..

Music Monday - The Modfather

This week I'm going to post three songs I like from of my favorite English Singer/songwriters Paul Weller "The Modfather". One song each from the three stages of his career "The Jam", "The Style Council" plus the "Solo" part of his Career.

I first saw Paul back in 1980 when he was the main man in "The Jam", teaming up with former school friends Bruce Foxton & Rick Buckler. The Jam in their short time became one of the most influential British groups or their era having know fewer than 5 number ones and many more top ten hits. On their surprise break up in 1982 they rereleased all their singles and had a phenominal 17 songs in the UK chart in the same week, still a record today I believe.

In 1983 Weller teamed up with keyboard player Mick Talbot of "The Merton Parkas" to form "The Style Council", they were joined by singer Dee C Lee later to become Wellers wife. Also joining the group was drummer Steve White who is still with Weller today. The group again had a lot of success with numerous top ten hits. This was a completely different sound to "The Jam" and opened Wellers music up to many new fans.

Since the brak up of The Style Council in 1989 Weller has had a very distinguised solo career writing and performing many great songs. So todays songs take you through thirty years of the English music scene. He has also played guitar for many other groups including such as lead on "Champagne Supernova" for Oasis.

The Jam - The Bitterest Pill (2nd last song by the group made No2 in the Chart).

The Style Council - Headstart to Happiness (never released as a single but I like it).

Paul Weller - Wild Wood (Title track of one of his many great albums).

Bonus Track - Well it is "St Georges Day" so we have to play Paul performing "English Rose" a song he wrote when with "The Jam".

I don't know if any of you have been playing any of the songs on "Todays Music Choice" on my sidebar but if you haven't these are what you have missed this week :-
Monday - The Stanglers (a bit of Punk)
Tuesday - Mama's and the Papa's (Some great sixties)
Wednesday - Rod Stewart & the Faces (some early Rod)
Thursday - Bob Dylan (a bit of Bob's style of Folk)
Friday - ABBA (two pretty girls from Sweden)
Saturday - Muddy Waters (The great Blues singer)
Sunday - Marrianne Faithfull (good stuff from Mick Jaggers ex, plus a duet with David Bowie).

The Jam - THE BITTEREST PILL (I EVER HAD TO SWALLOW)

Classic Jam

The Style Council - Headstart For Happiness - Live

Superb

Paul Weller plays 'Wild Wood' live (Live Wood)

Sunday Sport - The point of no return

Disaster struck yesterday with Leeds going down 1-0 to Southampton, things started to go wrong in the 34th minute when Alan Thompson was sent off reducing us to ten men. The team battled bravely and hung on for almost an hour until Southampton sealed it with a late goal.
With two matches to play Ipswich (home) & Derby (away) we have now reached the point of no return.

Still on Soccer the MLS is looking interesting and its hard to pick a dominate team, nobody has won their three opening games.. I see this week New York Bulls have signed Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel from Aston Villa, he knows where the net is and I reckon he'll score a lot of goals.

New York Red Bulls are joint top of the East section with Chicago Fire with both teams on 7 points from their first three matches. Chivas USA are top in the west also on 7 points but Colorado Rapids can equal that if they win their game in hand today.

On to Cricket and England are out of the World Cup after been trounced by South Africa (who seem to be coming good at the right time).

So we'll move on to the domestic scene and the county championships as they started this week. Yorkshire got off to a flyer beating Surrey by well over 300 runs. We look to have a decent team this year and could win it, no fewer than 4 players scored centuries Jaques Rudolph, Jason Gillesbie, Tim Bresnan & Craig White. Young Spin sensation Rashid took a few wickets and chipped in with 86 runs in the first innings.

New captain Darren "Dazzler" Gough bowled well but it was Matthew "Hoggy" Hoggard that did the real damage with four key wickets in the 2nd innings. Now which two bowlers should have been in the England team ?

Today its the London Marathon and who in their right minds wants to run 26 miles is beyond me but two of the World great distance legends are taking part Kenya's Paul Tergat and Ethiopian Haille Gebrselassie. There will be around 30,000 people in the event many raising money for numerous good causes.

The World Snooker championships have started and to be honest I usually find the early rounds boring but this year the first round has paired together two of the Worlds greats "Rocket" Ronnie O'Sullivan and Chinese sensation Ding Junui, expect fireworks.

Night Out Tonight

Not much time for blogging tonight as I'm off out to York for a lads night out with some workmates (Skid, Loopy, Beachy and maybe Mad Jim if he turns up).

So I'll just post some pictures that were taken at a recent York trip.

My Doctor must be a magician

Since Friday my knee has hurt at the front just below the knee cap. It gradually got worse so yesterday I phoned the Doctors and arranged an appointment for this afternoon.

When I went to bed last night it was quite painfull and I couldn't bend my knee, this morning when I got up it was better but still painfull. This is normal each day it hasn't been too bad in the morning but deteriorated throughout the day.

I went to work but had to leave early for my appointment, the problem been today my knee just got better the longer the day went on. I arrived at the Doctors and was walking normal, I could bend it completely and I could hardly feel it. So either my doctor is a magician and can cure me without seeing me or else he must think I'm was a total time waster.

He did give it a good check out and I explained the symptoms, he reckons its what I thought from looking it up on the web, I had tendonitus. The treatment is basically rest and anti-inflammetry tablets, he told me the same one's I take for gout would do. Actually I have been taking these since my knee hurt so maybe they've done the trick. I just hope it doesn't return.

The Zimmers

I see "The Who" are touring again.
Roger Daltry looks younger every year.

Wednesday Weigh In - A little dissapointed

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Last Weeks Weight - 212.8lb

Todays Actual Weight - 211.4lb

Loss/Gain this week - -1.4lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 7.6lb

Today's Target Weight - 204lb

Loss/Gain against Target - 7.4lb

Well I've managed to lose 1.4lb this week but to be honest I'm a little dissapointed with that. I've worked hard at eating, drinking, exercising and was hopefull for about a 3lb loss. I suppose its a move in the right direction but I'm still 7.4lb heavier than my target for this week. Basically I'm averaging a loss of 0.5lb per week when I was aiming at 1lb.

Other bad news is my knee is hurting again but its totally different to last time when it became really swollen with gout. The pain this time is at the front and just below the knee cap, I've looked it up on the net and I think its tendonitus. It isn't that swollen (only slightly) and hurts most when I've been sat down a while. It also hurts if you prod it with your finger. Once I get moving its ok I can even jog on it without much bother.
Anyway I've booked to see a doctor tomorrow so hopefully he'll give me something to clear it up.

Good news only 7 days to go to my vacation.

Music Monday - American Dream

Another challenge to everyone this week, Ok I've got America on my mind as I'll be visiting in just over one week.

So the Challenge - How many songs can you name with "America" or "American" in the title ?

For those of you following my "Today's Music Choice" on my sidebar will maybe realise I've already posted one on Saturday when I featured Kim Wilde including the song "Kids in America", so obviously I'm not playing that one today.

Talking of "Today's Music Choice" if you have missed some these are the acts I've featured in the last seven days covering many different styles of music :-

Monday - Dave Clark Five (Great sixties group)
Tuesday - Buddy Guy (Chicago Blues singer and top class guitarist)
Wednesday - David Bowie
Thursday - The Stone Roses
Friday - The Doors (RIP Jim Morrison)
Saturday - Kim Wilde
Sunday - Willie Nelson

Anyway on with todays challenge I've come up with three more :-

America "Simon & Garfunkel" - The pairs 1968 classic.

The Hands that built America "U2" - Theme song from the Film "Gangs of New York".

American Pie "Madonna" - Madge too this Don McClean classic to the top spot in the UK.

While I'm talking music Rebecca pointed out to me its the New Orleans Jazz Fest at the end of April into early May and asked what I thought of the acts they have pulled together.
Well I reckon its a awesome line up from Rod Stewart to Steely Dan to ZZ Top to Norah Jones to The Allman Brothers plus many more great acts.
Well I'm afraid I'll be at the other side of the country but I'll have a serious think about attending this festival next year.

Check it for yourself - New Orleans Jazz Fest

U2 - The Hands That Built America

Sunday Sport

Yesterday it was the most famous Steeplechase in the World "The Grand National", this year won by a 33-1 shot "Silver Birch". Before anyone asks I didn't back the winner I went for Hedgehunter which finished 9th. The race is over 4.5 miles and the horses have to jump 30 fences.Silver Birch (left) clears the last.

I actually once attended Aintree for this great event back in 1977, I was actually at Canal turn so only saw the horses pass twice but I will always remember it cos it was of course the year "Red Rum" won for the third time, the only horse ever to achieve this. I was in the City of Liverpool that day because Leeds actually played Liverpool in the Morning.

While we are on to Soccer last week I reported Leeds had pulled out of the relegation zone with victory on Saturday. Well they dropped back in on Monday when they threw away the lead at Colchester to lose 2-1.
However yesterday we beat Burnley 1-0 thanks to a goal from Matt Heath and although we are still in the relegation zone (3rd bottom) Hull, Barnsley and Leicester are clearly in our sites, we only need to move up one place. Luton look down and Southend arn't looking good.

The Cricket World cup is still going on and Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka look nailed on for the Semi-Finals but England are still in there fighting. It looks like we'll have to beat South Africa to qualify.

Today was the third Formula one Grand Prix of the season and it has just been won by Phillipe Massa, Our boy Lewis Hamilton continued his great form finising 2nd. What a start to a carreer for a rookie in his first 3 races he has now finished on the podium in every race (3rd, 2nd, 2nd). I know there is still a long way to go but Hamilton is in a 3 way tie at the top of the World championship standings with former Champions Alonso and Raikennen, he couldn't win it could he ?

I'll mention Rugby league for my blog friend Airliebird as her side recorded a good victory over Salford and now seem to be getting their act together. Super League looks tight this year but St Helens seem to be getting into gear however Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls & Wakefield are all putting up a good Yorkshire challenge. I'll leave it to Airliebird to tell you about the player in the photo.Back to Soccer and I see over the Atlantic the MLS has started, I'm not sure how it works so if anyone can explain please do. Teams seem to be split into two divisions "East" & "West" with 7 teams in the East section but only 6 in the west. However it also appears there is some crossover of matches because today two teams who won their opening encounters Colorado Rapids from the West section entertain Chicago Fire from the East. The stadium above belongs to Colorado and is where todays match will take place. I haven't yet decided which team I'm going to support but and I'm not taking sides today as I have a blog friend in each place (Jenny "Colorado" & Regina "Chicago").

Todays other match New York Red Bulls play FC Dallas.

David Beckham had better get a move on as his team LA Galaxy have only one point to show from their opening two games.

League Standings :-

East - Kansas City Wizzards pld1 - 3pts, Chicago Fire 1 - 3, New England Revolution 2 - 3, Columbus Crew 2 - 2, New York Red Bulls 1 - 1, DC United 2 - 0, Toronto FC 2 - 0.

West - FC Dallas pld2 - 4pts, Houston Dynamo 2 - 4, Chivas USA 2 - 3, Colorado Rapids 1 - 3, Real Salt Lake 2 - 2, LA Galaxy 2 - 1.

Not a lot to report

I've not a lot to report at present, not much happening at all. At least we are in a good spell with the weather I've forgot what rain looks like.

Last night I got a few trophy's down from the loft I won last year at the York Championships and polished them up. I've to return them tomorrow so they can be engraved with the new champions name (remember I didn't compete or I would obviously have won them again um). I've to take them to the league secretary who lives in York so I'll go into the city afterwards cos there are a few things I need to get before my vacation.

I'll be collecting some American dollars and the good news there is the strong pound means it is worth almost two dollars great for us brits travelling to the States, makes the holiday cheaper.

A few workmates that are getting made redundant have been given their leaving dates this week others are staying on a while to help with decommisioning and training. I don't think the place will ever be the same again it used to be fun but it will soon be like a ghost town.

Next week I'm hoping to get a game of Golf after work on Wednesday I haven't had chance to play for months so I'll be really rusty. I'll enjoy the exercise though.

Monday we have a big Pool match, we are top of the league and play the team in 2nd who are only one point behind. They must be gutted with that because they are unbeaten 10 wins from ten where we have lost three out of our ten matches so far. We are top because its points for sets and when we have lost its been 5-4 but our wins have been big 8-1's & 7-2's. Personally I don't think I've played anywhere near as well as I can but this is a good time to lift the performance.

So thats about it nothing funny, nothing controversial, just boring.

Have a great weekend everyone

Wednesday Weigh In - Self Inflicted damage

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Last Weeks Weight - 210.9lb

Todays Actual Weight - 212.8lb

Loss/Gain this week - +1.9lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 6.2lb

Today's Target Weight - 205lb

Loss/Gain against Target - +7.8lb

Well a bad week I have to report I've actually put on 1.9lb in the week but to be honest I'm not surprised and I've only myself to blame. I am now a massive 7.8lb behind my running target and have only lost 6.2lb since the start of the year.
I'm only two weeks away from my first vacation and my target before I go is 203lb I've certainly got my work cut out to get anywhere near that. If anyone remembers my plan I posted at the beginning of the year ( 2007 Weight Loss Plan ) it was to reduce by an average 1lb per week but does allow for a 5lb increase on vacations. So I suppose if I can be 208lb in 4 weeks time I'd be back on track but to be honest losing weight on vacation is very doubtful.

Why I failed badly this week is simple :-
1. I've been lazy over the Easter Weekend and not exercised.
2. I've eaten a lot of Chocolate with it been easter.
3. I've been out drinking three times (a lot of drinks each time),
a) Thursday for a meal which also involved eating late at night,
b) Saturday was lads night out in York which again involved eating late (and cheeseburger and chips ain't good).
c) Monday we didn't have a Pool match so after a practice ended up at a quiz in a local pub (didn't win) and they brought sandwiches round in the interval.

What am I going to do about it ?
1. No eating after 6pm this week.
2. My car is locked in my garage and I will be walking the 2.5miles each way to and from work (started today).
3. Only one night out for Pool on Monday.
4. Two meals per day Breakfast and Evening meal, four pieces of fruit throughout the day between these.

Hopfully I'll see some improvement next week if I can keep this up.

Music Monday - The Leeds Scene

When many people think of the English music scene they talk about the Liverpool sound of the sixties with such groups as "The Beatles", "The Merseybeats", "Gerry & the Pacemakers", etc. They may even think of the London Punk scene of the late seventies or even the bands coming out of Manchester (Simply Red, Oasis, Stone Roses, etc) in the eighties.
Well I'm not going to write about any of them I'm going to tell you about the Yorkshire Music Scene, well not all Yorkshire just Leeds. Other of our cities have produced some good bands such as Sheffield (Human League, Pulp & Def Leppard) and Hull (Beautiful South & David Bowies group Spiders from Mars, I'll thank Airliebird for that fact).

So what great groups have been formed in Leeds :-

Soft Cell (Tainted Love) - Ok Marc Almond and David Ball where brought up in Blackpool and Southport but they met up while studying at Leeds University and formed Soft Cell at that time. This song is their most famous hit but is a cover version, it was origionally wrote by Ed Cobb of "The Four Preps and performed as a Soul number by Gloria Jones in 1964. The Soft Cell version made No1 in both the UK and Australia plus No8 in the US in 1981.

Chumbawamba (Tubthumping) - Origionally formed in 1982 Chumbawamba started out as a Punk group but today perform many different styles of music including Dance. Some of the names the went under when first formed include "Passion Killers", "Skin Disease", "Antidote" & "Scab Aid". They have had too many to mention members over the last 25 years.
Tubthumping was a 1997 hit in both the UK (No2) and the US (No6).

Kaiser Chiefs (Ruby) - The members of "The Chiefs" are fanatical Leeds United supporters so much so they named the group after South African Soccer team "Kaizer Chiefs" from which Leeds bought their legendary captain Lucas Radebe.
The band formed in 1997 won three awards at the Brits in 2006, "Best Group", "Best British Rock act" and "Best Live Act".
This song "Ruby" was their first No1 in February this year.
One big dissapointment for me these boys are currently on a US tour and play Seattle the day before I arrive.

And If you love music don't forget to keep your eye on "Today's Music Choice" on my blogs sidebar. I'm trying to change the acts daily and covering a range of styles of music new and old.
Just click on the one you would like to hear.

Sunday Sport - The Great Escape

Yes "The Great Escape" is on, for four months my team Leeds United have been stuck at the bottom of the Championship table, the football world have been writing us off. But Yesterday we won again making 5 matches without defeat and the big news is we are out of the relegation zone. 4th bottom is a result believe me we will settle for that, the light at the end of the tunnel is shinning again.

Yesterdays 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle was massive, once again we went behind but the team backed by our fanatical supporters (biggest crowd of the season) never gave up. That man David Healy grabbed an equaliser just before half time and with 5 minutes left on the clock our Slovakian Centre Half Lubomir Michalik (photo below) rose highest to head home the winner.

Its been a massive weekend for Sport, today I'm going to watch the final round of the US Masters Golf it looks like it could be really close. I wish I was in Augusta watching it live that would be a great trip, maybe have to do it one day, it looks a great part of the world.

Australian Stuart Appleby is leading by one shot from Tiger Woods and Englishman Justin Rose (the one in red in photo), many others are in contention. Come on Justin.
In Formula One motor racing it was the 2nd round with the Malaysian Grand Prix, it was one by McClaren driver Fernando Alonso but another great performance from young Englishman Lewis Hamilton who came in 2nd.

In Boxing Welshman Joe Calazaghe made 20 succesfull defences of his Super Middleweight World Title by stopping his opponent, he is some boxer.

Rowing gets a mention this week as it was that event again "The Boat Race". For those that don't know anything about it the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford race along the River Thames in London over a distance 4 times greater than the Olympic distance. Its been going on for years and is an old English tradition, this years race was won by Cambridge.

England have been playing Holland at Tennis in the Davis Cup and won yesterday at 3-0 up so today's singles are irrelevant. Andy Murray and Tim Henman won their singles on the first day and yesterday a doubles win for Greg Rusedski and James Murray sealed the match.
Afterwards Greg announced his retirement and I reckon he's done pretty well (15 career titles) since moving to our country from his native Canada. He once held the record for the fastest serve (149mph). The Cricket world cup is still going on and its not looking great for England reaching the Semi-Finals following their 2 run defeat by Sri Lanka. Today they play Australia who have looked unbeatable so far.
Well done though to Bangladesh who yesterday beat one of the favorites South Africa. Violence reared its ugly head in Europe this week, first in Rome with clashes between the home sides Ultra's and travelling fans of Manchester United. Although I hate the Red Vermin of Manchester what happend was totally out of order. Of course the local police do what they always do in Rome and attack the English supporters with their batons and let the locals get
away with it. This always seems to happen in Italy the Police are bigger thugs than the fans at times, Similar things happend when Leeds went there, Liverpool also got a hammering.
I'll also point out Roma's so called Ultra's are a bunch of cowards and usually only attack other fans when they have significant more in numbers as happend against Middlesborough last season.
Not to miss out the Spanish Police of Seville did a similar Baton Charge into Tottenham supporters the following night. Why are some countries living in a time warp ?
While we are talking of Football violence it was this week seven years ago that two Leeds Supporters Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were slaughtered on the streets of Istanbul at the hands of the scum that follow Galaterasary. You will always be remembered lads.

Billy's statue became a shrine to the two fans.

Every Leeds fans in Turkey actually turned their backs to the match in protest to it taking place following the murder of their friends.

Another Last Supper

Last night eight of us from work went for a meal with a young lady called Sinead who has now left. She actually isn't one of the redundancies she was going anyway and is moving back to her native Ireland.
Last night was paid for by the company but many of us also went out with Sinead last friday in what can only be described as an eventfull night.
Sinead is a really nice person and easy to get on with, she was also a regular at many of our works night outs and I reckon she'll miss the gang a little. At work she was in charge in some of our laboratories on site and was popular among her workers, she had to be she has a cute pretty face.
For the meal last night we went to a small family run Italian restaurant called Valentino's which is in village called Riccall between Selby & York.
The people who were there last night including myself & Sinead represented a few different departments were Andrew M(Plant Manager), Phil (Chief Chemist), Andrew H(Safety Manager), Diane (Human Resources), Vicky (Accounts), Samantha (Sales) & Sue (Reception),
For the meal I can't tell you what its proper name was but I had Sirloin cooked in a Gorgonzola and cream sauce it was superb. I also had a starter (Pate) which was also excellent but I didn't bother with a Sweet. Between us we also downed some beer a few bottles of wine and some shots so a good night was had by all.
One regret last night I forgot my camera so no photo's to post, I actually gave Sinead my blog address so maybe she'll keep in touch.
Obviously with all the redundancies happening over the next few months (some people are staying on for de-commisioning and training) I should be attending plenty more leaving do's.

For Cactus

Wednesday Weigh in - At least a loss week.

2007 Start Weight - 219lbs

Last Weeks Weight - 211.5lb

Todays Actual Weight - 210.9lb

Loss/Gain this week - -0.6lb

Loss so far in 2007 - 8.1lb

Today's Target Weight - 206lb

Loss/Gain against Target - +4.9lb

Not enough (0.6lb) but a loss is always welcome partucularly as I had two heavy nights out last week. The next three weeks upto my holiday is going to be difficult as there are so many parties/nights out to attend for various reasons. After my holiday I will have to work so hard to get back to my target, remember I allow for a 5lb increase on vacation but I'm 4.9lb behind now so its going to be tough.

Tomorrow night I'm off out to a leaving dinner for Sinead, nine of us are going to a really good Italian restaurant called Valentino's, plus food and drink will be paid for by the company.
Saturday night a few of the Table Tennis boys are off out around York for our annual wild night out and it'll be a late one. There again it might not be as eventfull as last Friday but I'm not going blog about that one.

Anyway thats enough about me I have a musical bonus tonight :-

I saw this young lady performing with her group outside Pier 39 when in San Francisco in December.
What impressed me was that she only did stuff she wrote herself and no cover versions. I watched for quite a long time and was impressed by her talent

Check her out - Grace Woods

Well I've found her performing on Youtube so have made some of her songs on my "Today's Music Choice", I like the 4th one "Johnny and Me" the best , what do you think ?

Music Monday - Animals & Birds

Before I start on this weeks chart has anyone noticed the new feature at the top of my side-bar "Today's Music Choice". I'm hoping to post a different act most days so just click on the pictures to play and enjoy.

On to todays post and another Challenge for everyone this week - How many songs can you come up with that has the name of a Bird or Animal in the title ?

Good Test I reckon and I've come up with no fewer than five Classics all worth a view.

Albatross (Fleetwood Mac) - Arguably the best ever Instrumental record of all time.
This song made No1 spot in the UK on its 1969 release it also reached No2 in Holland & Norway, No4 in Sweden & No5 in Ireland.
Q Magazine named it No37 in the greatest guitar tracks of all time.

Eye of a Tiger (Survivor) - The Rocky films would not be the same without this superb song. It was actually the theme song for the third Film in the Rocky series but was a big hit in its own right reaching No1 in US, UK, Finland & Australia in 1982.

Poor Cow (Sham 69) - A bit different from what many people think is England best Punk Group. The group was formed in the mid-seventies by lead singer but broke up in 1980 when their concerts were hijacked by the Skinhead movement resulting in many riots. They reformed in 1987 with founder and lead singer Jimmy Pursey got back with songwriting partner and guitarist Dave Parsons. Last year they returned back to the UK charts with one of Englands World cup songs "Hurry Up England" a variation of their earlier hit "Hurry up Harry". This song "Poor Cow" is an album track.

Little Red Rooster (Rolling Stones) - A Fantastic Bluesy number from one of the greatest groups of all time. I always reckon the Stones play some fantastic Blues songs and I don't know why they don't produce a complete Blues album. Great here to see on this footage the late Brian Jones on slide guitar. Bill Wyman RIP in there as well, this is classic Stones Album track.

Tiger Feet (Mud) - Fun time group from the early seventies with their most famous song.
This song reached No1 in the UK in 1974 and I remember in my youth it been really popular at parties.

Fleetwood Mac Albatross

Instrumental Perfection ?

The Eye Of The Tiger From Survivor

Rocky wouldn't be the same without it.

Sham 69 - Poor Cow

Well this is different

Little Red Rooster - The Rolling Stones

Classic Blues by the Stones ?

Mud - Tiger Feet

Just Good Fun time Music

Don't mess with the British

A lot of the news at present is about the 15 sailors from the Royal Navy that have been taken prisoner by Iran who claims they were inside their territorial waters. Our government say's they were not but I think that is irrelevant, the point is they were doing their job and stopping the Iranians slipping weopens into Iraq.

Now I would suggest that Iran allows the diplomatic means allow for their release because the British will not stand for this and the preverbal shit will soon hit the fan. Already other coutries such as USA, Australia & Canada look like they'll support us. European countries have offered their support but I expect them to do their usual back track.

The situation reminds me of 25 years ago when Argentina on April 2nd 1982 invaded the Falkland Isles. As these were on their door step in the South Atlantic (8,000 miles from Britain) and with a poulation of only 1,800 inhabitants their military regime thought we would let them have them.

Wrong they were as our Prime Minister of the time Magaret Thatcher backed by all the other major political parties put together a task force of over 200 ships made up of Royal Navy & converted merchant ships plus 40,000 military personel to go and retake the Islands and bring them back under British rule. By June 14th the Union Jack was raised above the Capital Port Stanley bringing the end to what was probably the last traditional Land, Sea & water war the world will ever see, none of this terrorist shit. The life count was high with Argentina losing 655 troops, Britain lost 255 and 3 Islanders were killed. A large part of the Argentine deaths was when Royal Navy Submerine HMS Conquerer sank their Criser General Belgrano. Britain also lost a few ships such as HMS Sheffield & HMS Coventry, many landing vessels such as the Sir Galahad, Ardent & Antelope. Over 10,000 Argetinians were taken prisoner.
When the task force arived back in the UK they recieved a fantastic welcome in the Port of Portsmouth.

Sunday Sport - Off the Bottom

The giant is stirring, Leeds United for the first time in weeks are off the foot of the table. Now unbeaten in our last four matches there is real belief that the dreaded drop can be avoided. Ok we are still in the relegation zone but are on our best run of the season a number of our stars are returning from injury. 6 matches to go 6 cup finals to play but we will escape.

Fridays match against promotion chasing Preston was a classic and Leeds always looked the better side despite the league table saying different. Ok Preston scored first after 5 minutes but Leeds pushed and pushed util they wore their Lancashire rivals down. Robbie Blake got a well taken equaliser after a great run by Creswell but it was left to man of the moment and arguably Europes top striker Northern Irelands David Healy to sneak in for the winner with only a minute to go.
Luton are now bottom and theve just signed Leeds ex manager Kevin Blackwell so thats them doomed then. I'll tip Southend, Barnsley or maybe QPR for the drop cos we are coming past them.

Other Sports well the Cricket World Cup is going on in the West Indies despite the sad murder of former England Player Bob Woolmer (pic below) who had been coaching the Pakistan Coach. Woolmer was murdered in his hotel room following Pakistans defeat to Ireland. Mystery still surrounds what happend and everyone from Betting Syndicates, Fanatical Supporters and even the teams players have been blamed.

As for the Cricket England are still in the Super 8 stage and have just beaten Ireland albeit a little non convincing. Australia are playing well and look almost unstoppable at times but with 8 teams still in it anything can happen.

Its the World Swimming Championships and the big news is that a French newspaper has printed allegations suggesting 5 times Olympic Champion Ian Thorpe (Australia) has used performance enhancing drugs. Thorpe denies this so we will have to watch this space. I for one will be dissapointed if its proved to have any truth because I see him as one of the Worlds great athletes.

Back to Soccer and its been a week of qualifiers and England have been pathetic again. A scoreless draw against the mighty Israel (5 matches one goal) just wasn't good enough. Of course we did score 3 in our next match but hell we should be looking for ten against the even mightier Andorra. Its time for manager Steve McClaren to go he clearly doesn't have a clue and continues to play players out of their best positions.

So far in qualifiers England have scored eight goals thats just one behind Nothern Irelands prolific David Healy who this week scored 5 in two matches against Liechtenstein & Sweden to put his country in with a great chance of qualification. He is Europes top scorer.

New Month New No1 Blogger

Well done to Airliebird as she was my top blog commentator last month with 25 comments. This Yorkshire lass is usually in the top 3 or 4 but for the first time is my No1.
Celtic Girl maintained 2nd place with 19 comments while Rebecca moves up to 3rd with 17 comments.
The next three spots were close with two former No1's Cactus & Rachel on 13. Jenny is doing well to keep in touch with her big day approaching and had 12 comments.

I've taken off the list Redneckgirl, Joel & Modigli as they are no longer blogging although RNG still comments and hopfully the others will read from time to time. Saved these 3 in my favorites in case they ever have a change of heart.
