Don't mess with the British

A lot of the news at present is about the 15 sailors from the Royal Navy that have been taken prisoner by Iran who claims they were inside their territorial waters. Our government say's they were not but I think that is irrelevant, the point is they were doing their job and stopping the Iranians slipping weopens into Iraq.

Now I would suggest that Iran allows the diplomatic means allow for their release because the British will not stand for this and the preverbal shit will soon hit the fan. Already other coutries such as USA, Australia & Canada look like they'll support us. European countries have offered their support but I expect them to do their usual back track.

The situation reminds me of 25 years ago when Argentina on April 2nd 1982 invaded the Falkland Isles. As these were on their door step in the South Atlantic (8,000 miles from Britain) and with a poulation of only 1,800 inhabitants their military regime thought we would let them have them.

Wrong they were as our Prime Minister of the time Magaret Thatcher backed by all the other major political parties put together a task force of over 200 ships made up of Royal Navy & converted merchant ships plus 40,000 military personel to go and retake the Islands and bring them back under British rule. By June 14th the Union Jack was raised above the Capital Port Stanley bringing the end to what was probably the last traditional Land, Sea & water war the world will ever see, none of this terrorist shit. The life count was high with Argentina losing 655 troops, Britain lost 255 and 3 Islanders were killed. A large part of the Argentine deaths was when Royal Navy Submerine HMS Conquerer sank their Criser General Belgrano. Britain also lost a few ships such as HMS Sheffield & HMS Coventry, many landing vessels such as the Sir Galahad, Ardent & Antelope. Over 10,000 Argetinians were taken prisoner.
When the task force arived back in the UK they recieved a fantastic welcome in the Port of Portsmouth.

I find your comments interesting because it is your countrymen with whom Iran is now "messing." I wonder what will happen with this. It seems like Iran, the government as opposed to terrorists acting on their own, expects some kind of payoff with its actions. Everything seems so uncertain to me right now. And long range frightening.

Ooops. I also wanted to mention that I'm glad to "hear" from your previous posts, that your knee is feeling better.

Arlene,
Not sure where this is going to lead, I think it will probably be eventually settled by diplomatic means.
However if our intellegence get a location where they are don't be surprised if the SAS (our elite force) go in and get them out.
Our news reports suggest the US have moved two Aircraft Carriers into the area, official line "On manoevres" um.
The Knee is feeling good at present thanks for your concern.

I think the situation sucks about the sailors. I hope to see the released and unharmed rather quickly.

Any news at work?

Be sure and give Rachel some extra love this week. She's really got a lot of crap on her plate!

The big difference between the Falklands and today is we just do not have the manpower we once had. I was listening to the radio the other day, and someone said that more people go and watch The Arsenal on a Saturday afternoon than personnel in the Royal Navy. The thing is, if Blair wants to play 'tough guy' around the world, he should look after the forces.
I hope to God things are sorted out diplomatically, because if we think that Iraq and Afghanistan are bad, I dare not think what a conflict with Iran would be like.

Nice commentary about the 1982 attack!
And you are right, this terrorism thing is "Shit"! It's almost like the world is letting the "little tantruming people" take over. It's rediculous!
I really do hope that each one of those sailors is released unharmed.

Rebecca,
This sailor thing will be resolved or esculate.
Nothing from work.
Rachel knows she can count on me, wish I was over there for her.

Airliebird,
I agree too many cutbacks in the armed forces.

Cactus,
Whatever peoples beliefs terrorism is a horrific crime on society.

Celtic,
The type of war in the Falklands will never happen again, it was a throw back to the 2nd world war.
