Work

Since early December we have been waiting for an announcement from our upper management with regards to the future of our factory.

Today we got that announcement and around 100 people out of a workforce of 140 are going to be made redundant.

We currently manufacture two products but are going to cease production of one of these due to the fact it can be produced cheaper in China. What pisses me off is a lot of our production expenses are due to working within emmission laws, health & safety rules, etc. In China they break every rule in the book still pollute the planet yet major western companies have moved their supplier from us to them. I'll add I will no longer buy anything from Coca Cola.

Also in our country the cost of energy is riddiculous where as the Chinese get government grants. Thank you Mr Blair I reckon there will be no industry in the UK within 10 years.

Other costs that have screwed us is the cost of raw materials due to EU sanctions, what a f*****g joke.

At this moment in time we don't know for sure who is going and I may be safe, who knows. To be honest I'm not really bothered either way, i'll have a look at the new job descriptions.
I'll add I've worked at the same factory since I left school, 32 years so maybe its time for change.

Politicians certainly know how to fuck the country. We have the same problem hear and it gets under my skin. Our major organisations either send their work offshore OR import cheap labor predominately from Asia.I do my bit by not buying goods or services where this happens, it's not much but feel I have to make a contribution.

Yeh I hate politicians they are truly screwing us. I don't usually comment on politics but I watched a programme on telly about the factories in china pumping their waste in the rivers. Thousands of people living along the Yangtze are dying from pollution induced illness.
We are competing on an unfair playingfield.

I'm not saying we should pollute our rivers, I'm saying we shouldn't import from these countries until they clean up their act.

What a pisser! Well, if you do have to find a new job, I am sure you will find something that you will really like. That is sometimes the best thing about forced change, it can often be for the better.

I REFUSE to buy any foodstuff made in China for exactly the reason you have just mentioned,I only last week was horrified to learn my once favourite cripbreads were "Made in China"= I have since chucked them in the garbage and have now found a Aussie made alternative.

Aaawww Coke owns heaps of stuff! What do you make?

John works for Nestle and there was lay offs here last year due to some of the work going over to China. I'd like to know where in China they are building these factories as they have no room to move never mind build factories!

Get on the next boat of invaders and move to Australia lol

I hope things turn out for the best whatever happens with your job.
Our choices as consumers can change things I think.
The cheap products and services that places like China and India produce need us there to buy them. But if jobs are scarce and bills get higher, we wont have the money to buy any of it! Things don't just go up a little nowadays, they go up a LOT!

I don't buy Coca Cola stuff. I do buy Pepsi products but the ones here are canned up in Birmingham, AL.

Come to America to live is my vote! Well, wait and see if Hillary becomes president, dont come. No use in living in a country where the anti-christ is in charge.

Jenny,
Don't know if I'm going or staying but to be honest if I have to go the redundancy package isn't too bad. If I have to stay the job may be tough but a few more years may be a bonus.

Celtic,
Good for you, governments go on about global warming then allow cheap imports from these countries.

Cactus,
The commodity my company makes is "Citric acid" which goes in most soft drinks, Sweets, Washing powders, detergents, some phamacuticals, etc.
I'll have to think about a move one day ?

Sandii,
You're sweet yourself.
I think I may change country one day not sure where yet but Aus is a possibility.

Airliebird,
Couldn't have put it better myself.

Rachel,
I wouldn't write the US off either. Actually the company I work for has a number of factories in the US, Canada, Mexico, Columbia & Brazil. Some of them make Citric Acid others make a range of products so maybe Coke America still buy from us at present. You never know I may get a transfer to one of these one day

Disappointing news all around, but it sounds like you are taking it with a good attitude. Maybe this could be the beginning of a new work chapter in your life. Hopefully, YES!

I'm not too worried about about it either way I can't see the point of worrying about something that is out of my hands.
If I stay it'll be hard as we will be too short of people and if I go I'll get a pay out which will be enough to give me time to start something new.
The people I feel sorry for are my colleagues who have many financial overheads and can't afford it. I'm lucky not to be in that position.
