Boston Questions

Following the recent opinions of my blog readers in which Boston was voted the best city to visit I have been checking it out. I have some questions :-

When I search for Hotels the website gives me 4 areas to choose hotels, what is your opinion of these areas ?
1. Back Bay
2. Logan Airport
3. QuincyMarket-Financial District-Waterfront.
4. Theatre District-Downtown Crossing

The best hotel deal in each area I can find is :-
1. (Back bay) John Hancock Hotel & Conference Centre or Hotel 140 (both slightly more expensive than I would like).
2. (Airport) Embassy Suites - apparently close to train station and not a problem getting into town. Can get a decent deal here.
3. (Quincy) Harborside Inn of Boston (more expensive than I really want)
4. (Theatre) Milner Hotel - much cheaper than anything else, is it a dump or bad area ?
Other hotels in this area are far too expensive.

Can you give any opinions on these hotels ?

Does the train system operate 24 hours ?

Both Back bay and Quincy are the heart of Boston's historic and tourist districts--hence the reason they are so expensive. I am not familiar with the Theatre district. Logan airport is not too far, but I would fear that you have to take a lot of transportation to get to and from places.

The T, which is what the subway is called in Boston, does not run all night. I think I recall most lines run until midnight-1 am or so. Therefore, if you are out late, you might need to take a cab if you stay to far away. The bus, however, might run later (I recall seeing it at night pretty late).

I would recommend checking their website www.mbta.com and you can look at schedules and routes to see where you plan to stay and what is available for travel options.

Hope this helps!

Oh let's clear something up right now.

One: Quincy is a city to the south of Boston. It has 4 stops on the red line (btwn JFK/Dorchester (bad) and Braintree (officially suburban)).

I can't tell you how many cars full of tourists I had to disappoint with this news when I was younger and lived in Quincy. Oh Quincy's got some stuff to see if you like old dead presidents' houses and the like. It's got a lovely view of Boston from Wollaston Beach (not accessible by T). Quincy is a former ship town working class pub on most corners wise ass kids looking to cause trouble neighborhoody kind of city that happens to, unfortunately, share a name with Quincy Market, which is a building/shopping area many miles away in downtown Boston.

Two: Quincy Market is in Faneuil Hall...sort of. Faneuil hall is ok, very touristy but some neat shops and some cool history. It's also close to the North End, Boston's Italian neighborhood (although that's changed a bit, it's still got some character, good restaurants, and bakeries/cafes).

I think Jenny's right on with the hotel run down. I'd avoid Logan. Convenient if you're a business traveller, less so if you want to get out and about. I can't offer much else on the specific hotels since I stay with family when I'm there. Here's a link for some reviews of the Milner hotel.

The T. I'm recalling several nights I ended up stranded in Boston waiting for the morning train. This was sort of fun for the first few hours, but Boston sort of rolls up the sidewalks at 2:00. The red and green lines are probably the ones you'll be using the most. Downtown runs on the red line stop by midnight, even on weekends. I think the green line might run a wee bit later, but not much. Avoid the hell out of the orange line. Seriously. The red line can be dicey through Dorchester, but the orange line outbound after Chinatown is nothing but trouble.

Jenny/Pfg,
Thanks for the advice it is appreciated. At present I have yet to find the price deal I would like but will keep looking.
I am checking out other cities as cost does have a bearing but I would like to visit Boston if possible.

Rachel,
A "University of Alabama" t shirt I don't think many around here will have one of those. Your a gem and I would love to visit your city and meet you one day.
ps: I reckon you would look great in a Leeds Utd Soccer shirt.
